Cruz Critics Create Mock “Barbie” Doll Line Trolling Senator

An anti-Ted Cruz political action committee has released an ad trolling the Texas Republican senator for obsessing over what he claims are hidden messages in the Barbie movie rather than more pressing political issues. The “Lose Cruz” PAC’s ad mocks the senator’s obsession with culture-war issues — both real and imagined — by unveiling a collection of “Cruz-inspired Barbie dolls” mocking Cruz’s past actions, statements, or political positions. The three Cruz-inspired dolls featured in the video show an “Insurrection Barbie”, with included a “Stop the Steal” button and podium to speak from as you attempt to “destroy democracy,” a “MAGA Podcaster Barbie” to help “promote the MAGA agenda” — a nod to Cruz’s own political podcast — and a “Cancun Barbie,” referring to the time when Cruz left Texas to vacation in Cancun while millions of Texans were left without power and water following a historic winter storm.Cruz recently branded the Barbie movie as Chinese propaganda for a scene in the movie depicting a cartoonish map of the world, displaying a dashed line through the water surrounding the map’s crudely-drawn Asian continent. Some have argued that the line is meant to represent the so-called “nine-dash line,” which Chinese propagandists have drawn on maps in order to lay claim to disputed territory in the South China Sea that other nations say does not belong to China. The controversy over the imaginary map led Vietnam, which has an ongoing conflict with China over where their maritime borders begin and end, to ban the film.

‘Barbie’ star Margot Robbie: The Spice Girls taught me how to be a feminist

Margot Robbie, the Spice Girls were no feminist wannabes. In fact, the two-time Oscar nominee attributes some of her own ideas about feminism — which she and director Greta Gerwig explore in the much-anticipated “Barbie” movie, out July 21 — to the 1990s British girl group.“The Spice Girls changed everything and dictated my version of second-wave feminism,” Robbie, 33, told Rolling Stone.“It’s like, ‘Oh my God, they wear little sparkly dresses and push-up bras and then have a girl gang? That’s what I want to be!’”Growing up in the ’90s, the Aussie-born Robbie also had a pink passion for the Aqua bop “Barbie Girl.” At the urging of the “Babylon” actress, the 1997 hit was included on the “Barbie” soundtrack — reworked as a “Barbie World” duet featuring rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.“I was like, ‘Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can’t do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl.’ It has to be in there,’” Robbie told a reporter.

‘Barbie’ approved to screen in Philippines but map lines must be “blurred”, says censorship board

Barbie film to be shown in the country’s cinemas, but have asked Hollywood distributors to blur the lines on a child-like drawing of a world map, which allegedly shows China’s disputed maritime claims. The film about the Mattel doll – directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling – is set to open in the south-east Asian nation on July 19.The censors began examining Barbie last week after Vietnam reportedly banned the film over scenes featuring a map showing the so-called nine-dash line, which China uses to justify its claim to the South China Sea.Beijing claims territorial ownership over almost the entire South China Sea, despite rival claims from other south-east Asian countries, including the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. However, after “meticulous” scrutiny of the film, Philippine censors were satisfied that the “cartoonish map” did not depict the nine-dash line.“Instead, the map portrayed the route of the make-believe journey of Barbie from Barbie Land to the ’real world’, as an integral part of the story,” the censorship board said (via The Guardian).“Rest assured that the board has exhausted all possible resources in arriving at this decision as we have not hesitated in the past to sanction filmmakers/ producers/distributors for exhibiting the fictitious ’nine-dash line’ in their materials.”Despite being satisfied, the censors have still asked Hollywood studio Warner Bros. to “blur” the controversial lines on the map.

Billie Eilish discusses the “infuriating” trend of fans throwing objects at performers: “We get it, but don’t do it”

Billie Eilish has weighed in her thoughts on fans throwing objects at artists onstage – labelling the trend as “infuriating”.The trend is one that has gathered rapid momentum in recent months, with numerous high-profile artists experiencing fans throwing items at them while they play live. The most prolific example occurred last month, when pop singer Bebe Rexha was left needing stitches after a member of the audience hurled a phone at her during her set. After the singer was filmed dropping to her knees in pain when the device hit her in the face, it was later revealed that the audience member threw it because he believed it “would be funny”.A similar incident happened to both Harry Styles, who was hit in the face during his Vienna concert, and Ava Max, who was slapped in the face by someone who ran onto the stage during a gig in Los Angeles.

Barbie for a lookalike joke that never made the cut.The actress, who plays the titular character in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film, said in a new interview that for years she has been compared to the Sex Education star on looks.Robbie told Buzzfeed in the latest instalment of its ‘Puppies interviews’ series, which she took part in with her Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling, that she would just say thank you to fans who would tell her how much they enjoyed her in Sex Education. The mix-up, Robbie said, led to the idea of casting Mackey in Barbie.“[Mackey] plays one of the Barbies in the movie pretty much because Greta and I thought it would be funny. We were gonna do this whole joke about us looking similar,” Robbie said. But the joke didn’t make the cut because “once we got all dressed up as our Barbies, we were kind of like, ‘We don’t actually look that similar,'” Robbie said.
