McKinley Franklin editor Christopher Nolan cast his eldest daughter in a gruesome role for his forthcoming feature “Oppenheimer.” Speaking with the Telegraph, Nolan revealed that his daughter, Flora, visited the “Oppenheimer” set, alongside his wife and producer Emma Thomas, while the film was still in production. Nolan then had the idea to cast Flora in a then-open role: a nameless young woman who has her face damaged by a nuclear explosion in a sequence within the main character’s mind. “We needed someone to do that small part of a somewhat experimental and spontaneous sequence,” Nolan said. “So it was wonderful to just have her sort of roll with it.” 

K.J. Yossman Rachel Shenton, who won an Oscar for best live action short in 2018 with her tearjerker “The Silent Child,” has created “Gladstone Girls,” a new scripted podcast series in which she also stars. Shenton, who is also known for her turn as Helen in British drama “All Creatures Great and Small,” will appear in the series alongside Anna Madeley (“All Creatures Great And Small”), Dot Atkinson (“Mum”) and Adrian Rawlins (“Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone”). The six-part series, produced by Slick Films, tells the story of a group of female workers who work in a pottery factory and are “determined to protect ‘Curl Friday’, a factory tradition that they hold dear,” according to the logline.

Naman Ramachandran “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Choose Irvine Welsh” are among the world premieres at the 2023 Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF), the full program for which was unveiled on Thursday. As previously announced, “Silent Roar” and “Fremont” will bookend the festival, which includes 24 feature films, five retrospective titles, five short film programs and an outdoor screening weekend with seven features. A hybrid adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic novella “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Hope Dickson Leach’s film transposes the action from London to Victorian Edinburgh. Ian Jefferies’ “Choose Irvine Welsh” is a documentary about the renowned “Trainspotting” author and features his admirers including Iggy Pop, Martin Compston, Danny Boyle, Bobbie Gillespie, Gail Porter, Rowetta and Andrew Macdonald.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Viaplay Group has unveiled its new operating model and executive management team for the Nordics as it anticipates an economic downturn. Earlier this month, Viaplay issued a warning over its second-quarter results and told employees that it would merge the Swedish and Norwegian units of its production arm into a new entity named Viaplay Studios. The listed banner also has new leadership — Anders Jensen stepped down and was replaced by Jorgen Madsen Lindemann as Viaplay’s CEO and president. Under the new operating model, which will be effective on July 1, the daily operation and strategic development of the businesses will be spearheaded by country management teams. Madsen Lindemann will be interim CEO of the Swedish and Finnish operations; Lars Bo Jeppesen has been appointed as EVP and CEO of the Danish and Icelandic operations and will join on Aug. 1.; and Kenneth Andresen has been appointed as interim CEO of the Norwegian operation.

Shooting is underway in Sicily on the indie drama “Hearts of Salt,” the first feature by London-based line producer Rosa Russo. The passion project is structured as a three-way co-production between Italy, the U.K. and Tunisia, with shooting also planned in the North African country. Tunisia will serve as a second location besides the Italian island. Though plot details are scarce, “Hearts of Salt” will see Vlahos — who will soon be seen opposite Lindsay Lohan in the Netflix rom-com “Irish Wish” — arrive in Sicily on a mission to study the effects of climate change on bird migrations. However, the ornithologist will soon have to abandon his role as a detached observer of flight patterns in the Sicilian skies after witnessing a series of dramatic events on the ground comprising cultural and generational clashes, a growing disconnect in family and human ties, and the broader ecological crisis which is the overall backdrop against which “Hearts of Salt” is set.

Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts called the current Supreme Court a “clear and present danger” and suggested the only way to right it would for Congress to add four justices – to make up for Republicans’ “stolen” appointments.Markey is one of seven congressional co-sponsors of the Judiciary Act of 2023, which was introduced in May and seeks to bring the total number of justices to 13. Appearing Tuesday night on “The Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell, Markey was asked to lay out his case for packing the court.“It’s a pretty clear case,” he said.

Love Island USA” is set to premiere on July 18 exclusively on Peacock, the streamer announced Wednesday.  The fifth season of “Love Island USA” will take place in Fiji with an all-new group of singles.
