Zack Sharf Beyoncé’s seventh studio album “Renaissance” debuted July 29 to universal acclaim, but one lyric in the song “Heated” left many listeners outraged on social media. The song includes the word “spaz” during a verse in which Beyonce sings: “Spazzin’ on that ass, spazz on that ass.” In the medical field, “spastic” refers to a disability that makes it difficult for people to control their muscles, especially in their arms and legs.
The singer’s team confirmed to Variety that the lyric will be removed.“The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced,” a statement from Beyoncé’s team reads. The lyric was criticized as ableist and offensive on social media, and it even inspired an essay published on The Guardian in which writer Hannah Diviney wrote, “Beyoncé’s commitment to storytelling musically and visually is unparalleled, as is her power to have the world paying attention to the narratives, struggles and nuanced lived experience of being a Black woman… But that doesn’t excuse her use of ableist language.” Beyoncé’s decision to remove the ableist lyric follows Lizzo’s decision to do the same. Lizzo used the same term in her song “Grrrls” off her latest album, “Special.” In the original track, Lizzo sang: “Hold my bag, bitch, hold my bag/ Do you see this shit? I’m a spaz.” The new version of the song finds Lizzo singing: “Hold my bag, bitch, Hold my bag/ Do you see this shit? Hold me back.”“Let’s make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language,” Lizzo wrote on social media while announcing the lyric change.

On Wednesday morning, Variety editors confirmed that Kelis’ “Milkshake” sample can no longer be heard on the track on Spotify — although the sample still remains on Apple Music.Given that many fans on social media expressed confusion as to what the sample actually was, popular TikTok music producer Jarred Jermaine broke it down in a recent post:This is the sample (interpolation) in Beyonce “Energy” off her album ‘Renaissance’ that uses Kelis “Milkshake” produced by Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo.
A new version of new Beyonce track ‘Energy’ has appeared on some of the streaming services with an element borrowed from Kelis hit ‘Milkshake’ removed. The rework follows criticism from Kelis last week, who said that she was not aware that a track on Beyonce’s new album ‘Renaissance’ would include an interpolation of her song, even though the writers and producers of ‘Milkshake’ had seemingly signed off on its inclusion.Kelis recorded ‘Milkshake’ with her frequent early collaborators The Neptunes – aka Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo – for her third album, 2003’s ’Tasty’, which was also released by the production duo’s label. She has criticised Williams and Hugo before, accusing them of backtracking on commitments regarding who would be credited on, and share in the copyright from, the songs they made together.

Beyoncé's highly anticipated seventh studio album, , has finally dropped and it's been met with critical acclaim, hilarious memes and controversy! The latest involves songwriter Diane Warren and some seemingly shady tweets. On Monday, Warren took to Twitter, writing an apparent jab at the songwriting credits on Beyoncé’s «Alien Superstar.»«How can there be 24 writers on a song?” she wrote with a rolling-eyes emoji. Warren claimed that her question wasn't meant to be shady, though she added in a since-deleted reply, „That's 23 more than on mine.“ features plenty of sampling and interpolation; »Alien Superstar" samples Foremost Poets' «Moonraker,» Right Said Fred's «I'm Too Sexy,» «Do It Your Way» by Mood II Swing, which itself sampled «Black Theater Speech» by Barbara Ann Teer, which also makes an appearance in the song. Thus, «Alien Superstar»s 24 credits. This isn't meant as shade, I'm just curiousAlthough Warren later commented that the samples in the music likely contributed to the numerous credited writers, members of Beyoncé's protective BeyHive took offense to the veteran songwriter's comments.
