Beyonce Removes Kelis 'Milkshake' Sample From 'Energy' Following Theft Allegations

Another Beyoncé collaboration has been revealed.

Renaissance (★★★★☆), an album that, at its core, captures the physicality of the dancefloor and everything that goes along with it.Its story should sound familiar by now: amid the uncertainty of a global pandemic and the claustrophobia of quarantines and lockdowns, an artist longs for the freedom, expression, and human connection of the club and puts out an album inspired by dance music.Although the COVID dance album has become something of a meta-genre at this point, Beyoncé’s take on it is, unsurprisingly, a standout.Renaissance is undeniably a fun dancefloor fantasy, but it works as well as it does because it is made from a place of intimate familiarity with its genre.

Kelis has responded to the news that Beyoncé has removed the interpolation of ‘Milkshake’ from ‘Renaissance’ track ‘Energy’, after Kelis claimed elements of the song were used without her permission or proper credit.Earlier this week, ‘Renaissance’ was updated on streaming platforms to remove the interpolation, following Kelis referring to its use as “theft”. While the official credits for ‘Energy’ mention that ‘Milkshake’ is interpolated on it, only The Neptunes – Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo – who wrote and produced the song, are credited as songwriters.

Beyoncé has removed a snippet of Kelis’ song Milkshake from her track Energy following criticism from the singer. At the end of the original version of Energy, the pop superstar sang a series of “las” to the tune of the 2003 R&B hit. However, they no longer feature on the Spotify or YouTube versions of the track.

Referring to Lewinsky’s infamous scandal with former US President Bill Clinton, Bey sings on the track: “Oh, he so horny, yeah he want to fuck / He popped all my buttons, he ripped my blouse / He Monica Lewinsky’d all on my gown.” Lewinsky first addressed the lyrics in a 2014 article written for Vanity Fair, wherein she said: “Thanks, Beyoncé, but if we’re verbing, I think you meant ‘Bill Clinton’d all on my gown’.”Now, she’s revived talk of the reference on Twitter, responding to the news that Beyoncé would change an ableist lyric on the song ‘Heated’, which appears on her just-released ‘Renaissance’ album.
