Will Smith cheered by Hollywood as Academy attempted to eject ‘King Richard’ star after Chris Rock slap

New details have emerged surrounding the question of why Will Smith wasn’t removed from the 94th Academy Awards following his viral smacking of Chris Rock. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Wednesday said that Will Smith was asked to leave Sunday's Oscar ceremony after striking Rock but, they claim, he refused to do so. "Jada, ‘GI Jane 2,’ I can’t wait to see it," Rock said on stage in front of the Oscars audience, including to an unhappy Pinkett Smith.  The actress has been publicly outspoken about how she deals with alopecia – an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss.

According to his son and spokesperson, Richard Williams does not support violence. "We don't know all the details of what happened. But we don't condone anyone hitting anyone else unless it's in self-defense," Richard Williams said via his son, Chavoita LeSane, to NBC News.

Beyonce Opens the Oscars With Tennis-Themed Performance at Venus and Serena Williams’ Hometown Court

As reported by Variety earlier this week, Best Original Song nominee Beyonce opened Sunday night’s 94th Academy Awards ceremony with a tribute to Venus and Serena Williams performed on the famed tennis courts “in the heart of beautiful Compton, where we truly came alive as professional athletes,” the sisters said when introducing the singer’s opening set.Of course, Beyonce performed “Be Alive,” her song from the Will Smith-starring film about the Williams sisters, “King Richard.” The performance opened with a number of characteristically statuesque Beyonce dancers, clad in tennis-ball-green outfits, walking down a Compton street toward the courts, past the kind of low-rider cars made world-famous in Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg videos in the 1990s.

Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Reba McEntire Among Performers Confirmed For Oscar Show, But No Van Morrison; Expect ‘Bruno’ Production Number

As Deadline broke yesterday, Beyonce has now been officially confirmed to sing in one of the slots of Best Original Song contenders on the 94th Oscars. As noted in the Deadline article speculation is her performance of her nominated song (co-written with DIXSON) called “Be Alive” from King Richard will take place via satellite from a Compton tennis court. That aspect however was not in the Academy’s long awaited announcement of plans for the Best Song presentations. As my colleague Mike Fleming noted the formal announcement would come after voting closed, and indeed it did exactly at 5pm PT which is the same moment ballots had to be in to Pricewaterhouse. The campaign is over. All that is left now is the show itself.
