If you’re a fan of Korean films, you’ve probably heard of filmmaker Im Sang-soo. He’s been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or twice by the Cannes Film Festival (and a third selection happened last year in the COVID-canceled fest).

In Minari, writer/director Lee Isaac Chung and Steven Yeun tell the story of a Korean immigrant family risking everything in pursuit of the American dream. Jacob (Yeun) uproots his family from 1980s Los Angeles, determined to start a farm in Arkansas, while his wife Monica (Yeri Han) grows weary of his optimism in the face of isolation and dwindling funds.

For a start, a Hollywood title scored a rare victory.“Wonder Woman 1984,” the most recently released film of international significance, took the top spot for the second weekend.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari starring Steven Yeun is very much an American story. Chung, who was born in Denver, Colorado, tells the story of an immigrant Korean family that has lived in America for some time as they adapt to their new farm life in a small Arkansas town. All that said, the A24 film was put in the Best Foreign Language award category for the upcoming Golden Globes — and people aren’t very happy about that.

Variety, the A24 drama will be relegated to the Best Foreign Language Film category because it is primarily in Korean.

The 2021 Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) are under fire for their choice to include Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari in the Best Foreign Language Film category, shut out from the Best Picture race.

Movie fans are calling foul on the Golden Globes.
