Berlin Film Festival Winner ‘There Is No Evil’, By Detained Iranian Filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, Clinches U.S. Deal

Film festivals worldwide are teaming up to launch “We Are One: A Global Film Festival,” which will play out over 10 days and be available for free on YouTube.

LOS ANGELES — More than 20 film festivals around the world have joined together to stream movies free on YouTube after the coronavirus pandemic shuttered movie theatres and forced the cancellation of annual showcases in Cannes and New York.

With festivals around the world canceled, movie theaters closed indefinitely, and blockbusters delayed, YouTube is doing its part to bring the film festival circuit to people at home by launching We Are One: A Global Film Festival, a free 10-day digital fest which will feature programming curated by 20 film festivals, including many which were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Kino Lorber has acquired the U.S. rights to persecuted Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s drama There Is No Evil, about executioners who enforce the death penalty in the Islamic Republic.

Fortunately it's a TV drama without real world consequences as it portrays a crack Mossad agent hunted in her home town of Tehran as she finds refuge and romance among dancing and drug-taking secular Iranians.

Coronavirus or not, the German film industry has determined that the show must go on. Germany will still hand out its equivalent of the Oscars, the German Film Awards, in a live ceremony in Berlin on April 24, despite the country being on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
