We may be in 2022, but women are still fighting for basic human rights. Last week, in America the Supreme Court overturned the Roe V Wade ruling. This 1973 legislation protected a person’s right to choose to have an abortion, but now every state can choose their own laws for the medical procedure. It is particularly devastating as research depicts that restricting access to abortions doesn’t stop them from happening, but instead prevents them taking place safely.
Here, in England, Scotland and Wales women, trans and non-binary people are able to get an abortion up until 24 weeks. In Northern Ireland the limit is 10 weeks, with legal rights to travel to England for the procedure. While people in the UK may not be directly affected by the law change, it is still difficult for many to comprehend the ruling and what it means for women across the ocean.
Many celebrities have spoken out against it including Lily Allen and Olivia Rodrigo who dedicated their powerful duet of ‘F**k you’ at Glastonbury to the Supreme Court judges. While she’s also spoken out about us not needing to justify our reasons for wanting abortion legalisation. ‘I didn't want a baby and that's reason enough', she explained of her own procedure.
Here, we speak to new mum Danielle, 27, who tells us why she'll never regret her decision to have two abortions… “I was completely shocked when I heard the news from America. I can’t believe we are having this conversation in 2022. Having to carry a baby to full-term when you don’t want it whether that’s for medical reasons, or just because you don’t want to be a mum is horrific.
