Behind her last EastEnders scenes, the star was dealing with the end of her 14-year marriage, working non-stop and battling depression and insomnia. She previously told the Mirror : "My mind went to some major dark places. " Thankfully, she is now in a much better place, revealing recently she is "the happiest I’ve ever been". Before her long-running stint on the hit show, Rita had made a number of minor appearances in TV dramas, such as Sky One's Dream Team in 2002 and Mile High in 2003.
What some fans might not know about Rita is that she has an incredible voice, and for a while even had a short-lived music career before EastEnders. In the early 2000s she was part of the girl group, Girls@Play, who released two singles, Airhead and Respectable. Airhead reached number 18 in the UK Singles Chart while Respectable reached number 29.
