Russell Norman, a well-known chef and restauranteur who often appeared on BBC TV's Saturday Kitchen, has sadly passed away at the age of 57 after a brief illness.
The award-winning chef was surrounded by his friends and family in hospital when he died. A close friend is said to have revealed that Russell's wife, Jules, and their three children were at his bedside at the time.
The Evening Standard reported that Russell had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Just four weeks ago, his fourth cookbook BRUTTO: A Simple Florentine Cookbook was released, charting the creation of the smash-hit trattoria of the same name in London and showcasing authentic and exciting recipes from Florence and Tuscany. Russell caused ripples through the London restaurant scene by pioneering the idea of small plates, as well as re-popularising the Negroni cocktail.
He was also the founder of the award-winning restaurant and co-founder of the Polpo group of restaurants and Sputino restaurant and bar. Russell's business partner Richard Beatty paid tribute to the man he called his 'best friend', saying: "It is with the greatest sadness I announce the loss of my best friend Russell Norman.
"After a short battle in hospital, he died surrounded by family and friend. Russell is survived by his wife and three children, I ask that you respect the privacy of his family, friends and colleagues at this time." Back in February 2022, The Guardian asked, "Can a new venture from the man behind Polpo survive?" as Russell recovered from the closure of restaurants in the Polpo chain.
