BBC's Matt Baker opens up about 'upsetting' health issue affecting his life

Former Blue Peter and Countryfile presenter Matt Baker has opened up about a health issue that's been troubling him. The 46 year old admitted on the Mid Point podcast with Gabby Logan that he can no longer "able to bend forward" due to a back injury. During the chat, Matt revealed to Gabby, who he occasionally worked with on The One Show, that he "slipped a disc" in his back while rehearsing for a pantomime.
When asked by Gabby if he was still able to do backflips, given his past as a gymnast, Matt replied: "No, I can't now. I've injured my back. I can't tell you how upsetting it is as an ex-gymnast, not to be able to bend forward." He then joked about how discussing aches and pains is a part of midlife.
He went on to explain about the incident in more detail, and said: "I did my back in. I was doing a panto. I was doing Goldilocks and the Three Bears and we were practising with the stunt chairs, and the chair wasn't set correctly and bang! I went down on my coccyx and it turns out I slipped a disc in my back." Despite his efforts to recover through training and rehab, Matt confessed that he's had to resort to injections for relief.
Gabby then playfully pointed out that he lives with a physiotherapist, referring to his wife Nicola Baker.
The guest said on the podcast: "I know, exactly - so we tried all that. Went for the nerve block [injection]." Gabby thought he would "get that mobility back though," but Matt wasn't sure, admitting that he "tries his hardest" to keep fit but "those are the challenges as you get older."
