BBC Breakfast star Rachel Burden has confessed to feeling 'selfish' for deciding to have a baby at 41, as her newborn weighed only 3lbs.
The BBC 5 Live and BBC Breakfast presenter, who was already a mum of three, fell pregnant with her fourth child at the age of 41. Prior to her pregnancy, Rachel revealed that she and her journalist husband, Luke Mendham, had lengthy discussions about expanding their family. However, in retrospect, she feels her decision was 'selfish', considering the challenges she faced during her pregnancy.
Now 49, Rachel has labelled herself 'arrogant' for assuming her fourth pregnancy would be as smooth as her previous ones. But once she became pregnant with her fourth child, now eight years old, she quickly confronted the harsh reality of a difficult pregnancy. "I had three very sort of straightforward pregnancies and I made the terribly arrogant assumption I'd have a fourth baby and it would be fine and straightforward," she admitted.
"And I think sometimes when I reflect on it, I think it was a really selfish thing to do. "I came from a big family - I really wanted a big family. I had that moment where Luke and I sat around a table when the third child had gone to school and thought, 'Oh, this is so boring'," reports the Mirror.
Rachel, initially brushed off concerns about her health during pregnancy, believing everything would be fine. However, as time went on, she noticed something was amiss and began to 'puff up', a change that didn't go unnoticed by her family. It turned out Rachel was suffering from preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous pregnancy condition characterised by high blood pressure.
This led to the early birth of her son Henry at just 31 weeks.
