BBC's Bargain Hunt viewers were left seething when two contestants were booted off the show for a rule breach. The drama unfolded in an instalment of the show which aired earlier this year, with host Natasha Raskin Sharp who's just had a baby following a hush-hush pregnancy leading the charge at Ardingly Antiques Fair in West Sussex.
The Red team featured business owner Jenny and her daughter Caitlin, an operations manager, guided by antiques guru Raj Bisram.
Their mission was to snag an Arts and Crafts movement gem. On the Blue side, surveyor Vere and his son Ben, a retail manager, teamed up with expert David Harper, tasked with finding a piece with a Japanese twist.
Before the auction showdown, Natasha and antiques aficionado Tim Forrester mulled over the potential value of each find. Reds Jenny and Caitlin picked up a brooch they reckoned was from the Arts and Crafts era, but Natasha had doubts.
Tim sided with Natasha, pointing out that the Arts and Crafts period dated back to the late 19th century, suggesting the brooch appeared more modern. Nevertheless, he conceded it seemed "inspired by the movement".
Natasha then announced that the item would have to be disqualified due to a rule violation.
The brooch, which was purchased for £90, still went under the hammer and sold for a mere £20.
This would have resulted in a £70 loss for the Reds, but with the disqualification, they were hit with the full price as a £90 loss. Social media users were not pleased with the item's disqualification. One viewer expressed: "Hate these stupid challenges and disqualifications, bring the old format back", while another commented: "Aww that's a bit harsh".
