After “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” it’d only make sense for Saoirse Ronan to reunite with Greta Gerwig for her upcoming “Barbie.” And that was the plan until scheduling conflicts got in the way. But, due to that, unfortunately, Gerwig won’t be a “Barbie” girl next year.

Antonio Ferme editor Long before “Marriage Story” writer-director Noah Baumbach was attached to Netflix’s “White Noise,” several filmmakers mounted attempts to adapt the notoriously “unfilmable” novel of the same name written by Don DeLillo. Variety reported in 2004 that “The Addams Family” director Barry Sonnenfeld was on board to direct the film, known as his “longtime passion project.” The torch was then handed off to Michael Almereyda, best known for his 2000 film “Hamlet” starring Ethan Hawke, after Uri Singer acquired the rights to DeLillo’s novel. Baumbach’s “White Noise” served as the opening night screening for the 60th annual New York Film Festival on Friday, making its North American debut after a divisive premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The director told Variety on the red carpet that he didn’t give a second thought to the idea that his film’s source material was unadaptable.
When “Barbie” hits the big screen next year, one classic song will be missing.
Aqua‘s 1997 hit ‘Barbie Girl’ will not feature in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The Danish-Norwegian group, who have now been together for 25 years, recently commented on the song’s omission from the film, making it clear that they were far from surprised.Speaking to Variety, Lene Nystrøm suggested that using ‘Barbie Girl’ would be too on the nose and “cheese on cheese,” while Søren Rasted appeared to find the whole situation amusing.“We should say we turned it down, he joked. “Ryan Gosling is not good enough!”The did admit, however, that they’re excited for the film, with Nystrøm adding: “I totally understand why they didn’t use it, but it’s going to bring us a lot of attention, no matter what.”Elsewhere, Margot Robbie recently revealed that she was “mortified” to see on-set pictures of her and Ryan Gosling leak online.“I can’t tell you how mortified we were, by the way,” she told Jimmy Fallon of the leak.

According to Aqua singer Lene Nystrøm, using the song would be “too on-the-nose.” “I totally understand why they didn’t use it,” said Nystrøm, adding that its inclusion would be “cheese on cheese.” She also saw a silver lining to the situation: “It’s going to bring us a lot of attention, no matter what.”“We should say we turned it down,” joked bandmate Søren Rasted.
Mike Wass Helium-pitched vocals and kitschy lyrics made Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” a novelty hit for the ages, and the perky euro-pop anthem, which took the world by storm in 1997, is still going strong 25 years later. The candy-colored video has amassed more than 1.1 billion views on YouTube and any conversation about Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “Barbie” movie eventually leads to the question: Will “Barbie Girl” be part of the soundtrack? The answer to that question is no. Which isn’t surprising given that Mattel sued Aqua in the ‘90s — and lost — but it’s still disappointing for many. The Danish-Norwegian group, however, is decidedly nonplussed.
