BAFTA Won’t Give Out Honorary Film Awards In 2022 After Noel Clarke Controversy

BAFTA will not hand out any honorary prizes at its 2022 Film and Games awards ceremonies as it plans to implement new vetting processes following the Noel Clarke controversy last year.
Clarke was awarded the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award at the 2021 ceremony, despite the org having been contacted with allegations of sexual conduct made against the Bulletproof and Doctor Who star. At the time, BAFTA said it had not been presented with enough concrete info to take back the already announced prize, but the body went on to implement a thorough review of how it chooses its honorary recipients.
Clarke, who denies wrongdoing (and is reportedly trying to make a documentary to plead his innocence), has since his award suspended by BAFTA, as well as his membership.
BAFTA also awards an honorary Fellowship each year, which is being paused as well. The org previously rescinded Rolf Harris’ Fellowship in 2014 after the TV presenter was found guilty of indecent assault.
Last year, no special prizes were awarded at BAFTA’s TV Awards in the summer as the overhaul process began. The body said today that it had now concluded “a lengthy, thoughtful and thorough review” of its special awards but it still needed time “to properly implement the recommendations of this review”.
Key to BAFTA’s planned implementations following the review process include the forming of a selection co-ordinating committee, a diverse group across age, gender and race made up of BAFTA members that will oversee a rolling longlist of potential special awards recipients. The additional time will give BAFTA the chance to select the committee members.

Little Simz’ Spotify streams soar over 350 per cent following BRIT Awards 2022
Spotify streams of Little Simz‘ music have soared over 350 per cent following her appearance at this year’s BRIT Awards.The rapper, who released her last album, ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’, back in September, won the award for Best New Artist at last night’s (February 8) ceremony at London’s The O2. She also performed a medley of her tracks ‘Introvert’ and ‘Woman’.Her massive night has since prompted a huge spike in Spotify streams in comparison to other BRITs winners including Adele, Silk Sonic, Ed Sheeran, Dave and Sam Fender.There was a 812 per cent increase in streams of ‘Introvert’ and a 594 per cent spike for ‘Woman’, equating to a 365 per cent jump overall.Elsewhere, Adele, who took home three BRITs last night (Artist Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year), saw a 137 per cent increase in Spotify streams following the awards, while Dave’s streams went up by 217 per cent. Fender’s music saw a 79 per cent jump.“As ever, the BRITs showed the incredible breadth of talent being fostered here in the UK, across every genre of music,” Tom Connaughton, managing director of Spotify UK and Ireland, said in a statement (via Rolling Stone UK).

Ed Sheeran and Bring Me The Horizon opened the BRIT Awards 2022 tonight (February 8) with an unlikely new version of the former’s ‘Bad Habits’.The track was the first single to be taken from Sheeran’s 2021 album ‘=’ and topped the Official UK Singles Chart for 11 consecutive weeks.Taking to the stage to kick off this year’s BRITs, Sheeran and Bring Me The Horizon delivered an amped-up version of the hit, complete with an array of dancers, some of whom hung from wires and spun around above the stage. BMTH frontman Oli Sykes put his own spin on the song with his adopted verses delivered in his trademark growl.Sheeran will perform again later in the ceremony.
