Todd Longwell The Sony Pictures sequel “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” made headlines as it rolled through a succession of Florida locations in late February and early March, with reports of crews “spark(ing) buzz” filming on the A1A Highway in Fort Lauderdale, fans catching a glimpse of stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Brickell, and traffic tie-ups in Miami. “If you look at the trailer, you’ll see anything that has to do with the beach is all us, with the stunt scene that they did on Ocean Drive in Fort Lauderdale,” boasts Sandy Lighterman, film commissioner for Broward County (Film Lauderdale) and president of Film Florida.
“That was because we made it so easy for them.” One of the reasons the presence of the latest “Bad Boys” movie was such big news is that while Florida has a wealth of TV production courtesy of Spanish language networks Telemundo and Univision, commercial shoots, and reality series such as “Selling Tampa” and “The Queen of Versailles Reigns Again” — all of which maintain a healthy crew base and industry infrastructure — shoots for scripted Hollywood movies and TV series are a rarity these days. The state has served as the primary shooting location for many memorable projects, from movies such as “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” (1994) to the TV series “Miami Vice” (1984-1989) and “Burn Notice” (2007-2013).
But these days, major Florida-set productions are more likely to resemble Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale,” which was only there long enough to do aerial shots of the Bath & Tennis Club in Palm Beach, and Netflix’s remake of “Road House,” which was filmed almost entirely in the Dominican Republic. The reason is simple economics: since the sunset of the Sunshine State’s film and TV tax incentive in 2015,

Will Smith’s character in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is slapped repeatedly in a climactic scene, in what is being described as a nod to his infamous Oscars moment. At the ceremony in March 2022, Smith slapped Chris Rock onstage after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Following the incident, Smith apologised to Rock, resigned from the Academy, and was banned from attending Academy events for 10 years.Smith later released another apology on YouTube in July 2022 where he described his behaviour as “unacceptable”, adding: “I just didn’t realise, I wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment.”And now, in his new film, his character is seen being repeatedly slapped in the face in what many reviews have cited as an obvious reference to the controversy.Variety note that it could be an effort to “make cruel fun” of Smith’s “transgression”, while Daily Beast describe it as “a tasteless nod” to the real-life slap in order to “rehab Smith’s image”.Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is the fourth instalment in the buddy cop film series, starring Smith as Mike Lowrey alongside Martin Lawrence as Marcus Burnett.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic If there are five ages of man, maybe there are four ages of “Bad Boys.” There’s the early age — the original “Bad Boys” came out in 1995 — of youthful effrontery: zappy, flashy, mouthy, decadent. There’s the age when the heroes start to say, “We’re too old for this shit!” There’s the age when they’re too old to even be saying that.
The well-established ‘Bad Boys’ buddy cop formula isn’t rocket science. It’s combustible friction, and thus comedy between two very different Miami detectives— Will Smith as Mike Lowery and Martin Lawrence as Marcus Barnett—and as many chaotic shoot ‘em ups and car chases as possible as humanly possible mixed with Michael Bayhem-esque cinematic slickness and hysterics.
It may all be ridiculous if you think about it too much, but this action-comedy franchise still has gas in the tank even 30 years after the fortuitous teaming of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence first hit the beat as notorious Miami cops aka the “Bad Boys.”
Rebecca Rubin Senior Film and Media Reporter Whatcha gonna do when “Bad Boys” comes for the box office? If you’re a theater owner, the answer is hopefully sell some tickets. As that cavernous range suggests, estimates vary greatly depending on whom you ask.

Their m.o. on part 4: Make it fast, make it feel like a ride, and at 1 hour and 55 minutes, it’s the shortest Bad Boys ever. We talk with the duo today on Crew Call on one-upping Tom Cruise’s aerial stunt in Bad Boys: Ride or Die on his Mummy movie (interesting as the two are attached to reboot that Universal franchise), mining the action scenes in the script, jockeying production between two strikes last summer, and getting the best improv out of Smith and Lawrence. In addition, Adil and Bilall talk about the takeaway on Warner Bros’ unplugged Batgirl movie, and whether filmmakers can protect themselves in the future from such major studio shenanigans.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Sony Pictures Entertainment’s senior management says it remains “optimistic” about the future of cinema, despite a slow start to the North American summer season and industry talk of superhero fatigue. Speaking on a Sony Group Corporation conference call (on Thursday in Japan, Wednesday in Los Angeles), Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra blamed current box office torpor on three prongs of disruption that have affected movie production over the past five years: competition with streaming; the disruptions and cost increases brought on by the COVID-era; and last year’s writers and actors strikes. Together these have led to fewer films reaching theaters.
