Rebecca Rubin Senior Film and Media Reporter “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” gave the box office a desperately needed jolt, but the action-comedy fourquel can’t salvage the summer season by itself. Although the newest “Bad Boys,” reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami cops, arrived on the higher end of expectations with $56 million in domestic ticket sales, the year-to-date deficit actually grew more pronounced. Heading into the weekend, ticket sales were 24% behind 2023 and now overall revenues are lagging by 26% according to Comscore.
“Bad Boys 4” isn’t to blame for the decline; analysts believe it’s the lack of enthusiasm for other titles in the marketplace. Four of the other top five releases — Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” ($10 million), Paramount’s fantasy comedy “IF” ($8 million), the Warner Bros. supernatural thriller and fellow newcomer “The Watchers” ($7.4 million) and Disney and 20th Century’s sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($5.4 million) — brought in scraps.
Two of those films, “IF” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” have been playing in theaters for four and five weekends, respectively. So, comparisons to the same weekend in summer 2023 are tough because several movies were actively selling tickets: “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” topped the box office with $61 million, while “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” collected $55.5 million in its sophomore outing and “Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” added $23.1 million in its third weekend of release. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

If ever there was need of further evidence of Hollywood’s diminished power with Chinese audiences, this weekend provided it. “Moments’” win came at the expense of two U.S.
Angelique Jackson Following the franchise-topping $426 million success of “Bad Boys for Life” was going to be a tough task for any director. Fortunately, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” has two — the Belgian directing duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, collectively billed as Adil & Bilall. In this fourth installment, Adil & Bilall send Miami PD detectives Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) on the run, framed for crimes they didn’t commit.
Before Marvel movies would fill slots on a schedule, Jerry Bruckheimer productions did, and still do.

However, in a two-star review, NME criticised the film’s subplots, writing: “As the film’s title hints, Marcus also has a bizarre thing where he believes he can’t die … Needless to say, this irritating idea resurfaces time and again, to diminishing returns.”Compared with other major releases this summer, the film, which also stars Eric Dane and Vanessa Hudgens, was a close second to Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes in its domestic launch, which garnered an impressive $58million.Ride Or Die, which had a budget of $100million also had a successful opening weekend globally, collecting $19.3million in Europe, and reportedly setting franchise records in the Middle East and Latin America, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The first film in the Bad Boys franchise was released in 1995, and featured Lawrence and Smith as Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.

Will Smith’s character in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is slapped repeatedly in a climactic scene, in what is being described as a nod to his infamous Oscars moment. At the ceremony in March 2022, Smith slapped Chris Rock onstage after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Following the incident, Smith apologised to Rock, resigned from the Academy, and was banned from attending Academy events for 10 years.Smith later released another apology on YouTube in July 2022 where he described his behaviour as “unacceptable”, adding: “I just didn’t realise, I wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment.”And now, in his new film, his character is seen being repeatedly slapped in the face in what many reviews have cited as an obvious reference to the controversy.Variety note that it could be an effort to “make cruel fun” of Smith’s “transgression”, while Daily Beast describe it as “a tasteless nod” to the real-life slap in order to “rehab Smith’s image”.Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is the fourth instalment in the buddy cop film series, starring Smith as Mike Lowrey alongside Martin Lawrence as Marcus Burnett.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Martin Lawrence is assuring fans that he is healthy amid concern sparked by his “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” press tour. The actor appeared on a recent episode of Hot 97’s “Ebro in the Morning” (via Entertainment Weekly), where the host asked him about rumors claiming he’s not healthy. A video interview where Lawrence appeared to slur his words a bit and an appearance at the “Bad Boys” premiere where some fans thought he looked unsteady as he held on to Will Smith for support sparked concern.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic If there are five ages of man, maybe there are four ages of “Bad Boys.” There’s the early age — the original “Bad Boys” came out in 1995 — of youthful effrontery: zappy, flashy, mouthy, decadent. There’s the age when the heroes start to say, “We’re too old for this shit!” There’s the age when they’re too old to even be saying that.
The well-established ‘Bad Boys’ buddy cop formula isn’t rocket science. It’s combustible friction, and thus comedy between two very different Miami detectives— Will Smith as Mike Lowery and Martin Lawrence as Marcus Barnett—and as many chaotic shoot ‘em ups and car chases as possible as humanly possible mixed with Michael Bayhem-esque cinematic slickness and hysterics.
It may all be ridiculous if you think about it too much, but this action-comedy franchise still has gas in the tank even 30 years after the fortuitous teaming of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence first hit the beat as notorious Miami cops aka the “Bad Boys.”
