Naman Ramachandran Film Soho, official partners of the Cannes Film Market and Cannes Next, has revealed the speakers for the fireside chat at this year’s Global Virtual Production Summit. The opening event, to be held on May 18, will feature “1899” cinematographer Nik Summerer, BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor at ILM, David Vickery (“Avatar: The Way of Water,” the Jurassic World franchise), and actor Christina Chong (Star Trek series “Strange New Worlds”) discussing the topic How Virtual Production is Empowering Film and Storytelling Visionaries. The discussion will be moderated by BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb. The ticketed event will take place at the new beachside venue Plages des Palmes. Later that evening, the venue will play host to the official Cannes Next opening party presented by Film Soho.
The following day, the Global Virtual Production Summit will be held at the main stage of the Film Soho Innovation Hub, located at the Village International. The summit will feature Film Soho and its partners, including disguise, V-Studios, Brompton Technology, Virtual, Hadean and stYpe. Highlights of the summit include masterclass sessions, panel discussions and interactive workshops. Film Soho’s masterclass sessions will cover topics such as virtual production breakdowns and traditional model making combined with virtual technology. Panel discussions will include subjects like markerless motion capture and understanding trends, tools and platforms shaping the future of cinema. Something weird is afoot in Season 2 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”The next chapter of the Paramount+ series will feature a crossover with fellow “Trek” series “Lower Decks.” Crossovers aren’t unusual, but in this case “Strange New Worlds” is a live-action show, and “Lower Decks” is animated.All will be explained in due time, but somehow “Lower Decks” crewmembers Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) will board the U.S.S. Lise Pedersen The highest award for docs-in-progress at the Cannes Film Market’s sidebar dedicated to documentary, Cannes Docs, has gone to Ya-Ting Hsu’s debut feature doc “Islands of the Winds.” Twenty years in the making, the film follows the anti-eviction struggle of the patients of Losheng Sanatorium for lepers, which became a symbol of the fight for democracy in Hsu’s native Taiwan. The prize comes with a €10,000 ($10,800) cash prize and project follow-up by IEFTA (the International Emerging Film Talent Assn.). It is produced by Hsu’s Taiwan-based Argosy Films and Media Productions, Huang Yin-Yu (Moolin Films, Ltd. & Moolin Production, Co., Ltd, Taiwan and Japan) and Baptiste Brunner (Wide Productions – La Cuisine aux Images, France).
Naman Ramachandran “Lioness,” an official Indo-U.K. co-production being made under the 2008 bilateral treaty, will star Aditi Rao Hydari (“Jubilee”) and Paige Sandhu (“Emmerdale”), it was revealed at the Cannes India pavilion on Tuesday. Written and to be directed by Kajri Babbar (“Khoj”), the film is inspired by the research of Peter Bance, the historian who wrote about Princess Sophia Duleep, one of the key leaders of the suffragette movement in the U.K., the Princess of Punjab, granddaughter of Maharajah Ranjit Singh and the goddaughter of Queen Victoria. The film will tell the story of two British Punjabi women living in the U.K., a century apart. While Sophia’s story is rooted in history, the second story is a fictional tale of Mehak Kaur an educated, married immigrant woman living in 1990’s Southall.

Neeson has starred in dozens of films, including “Schindler’s List,” “Taken,” and “Batman Begins.” Condon was nominated for nearly every award imaginable for her supporting performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The starry ensemble also includes Colm Meaney (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”), Oscar-nominee Ciaran Hinds (“Belfast”), Jack Gleeson (“Game of Thrones”), Desmond Eastwood (“Normal People”) and Sarah Greene (“Bad Sisters”).
Naman Ramachandran Principal photography has commenced on Adam MacDonald’s survival thriller “Out Come the Wolves.” The feral feature, which will be shot on location in Dundas, Ontario throughout May, follows the story of a woman who takes her fiancé to a secluded cabin to meet her best male friend, before things take a dark turn during a hunting trip. The film is represented for international by Altitude Film Sales, who will be discussing the film with buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. MacDonald’s credits include “Backcountry”, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and “Pyewacket”, which also debuted at TIFF. He also directed the third and fourth seasons of “Slasher” and the upcoming season five for AMC’s Shudder. Most recently, he completed directing the first virtual reality horror movie experience for Meta entitled “Be Mine.”
