Ashley Cain collapsed in tears as he completed his 100 mile run in honour of his daughter Azaylia on Sunday evening. The 31 year old broke down emotionally after his epic 24-hour course as several fans gathered to cheer him on at the finish line in Trafalgar Square. Ashley had participated in the run on the first anniversary of his eight month old daughter Azaylia’s death following her battle with acute myeloid leukaemia after being diagnosed eight weeks after birth.
He began his difficult journey on Saturday in his daughter’s memorial garden in Nuneaton and ended in the heart of the capital, all in aid of raising money for The Azaylia Foundation, which was set up to support families with children suffering from cancer. It was a poignant moment in many ways for Ashley; as he remembered his brave little girl he finished his journey by the iconic lions statues — an animal he associated with Azaylia. In a video captured at the end of his run, Ashley can be seen holding onto family members as he hung his head and cried in what appeared to be relief, exhaustion and ongoing grief for his daughter.The inspiring eight-month old raised great awareness to the specific leukaemia she battled during her short life with an astounding £1.6 million raised in her name in a mere few days. Ashley was later seen in a clip uploaded to Instagram Stories sat in a car driving home after his run where he was able to tell his followers just how much the mission meant to him.
