Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Two more awards shows went gender neutral last week, fueling further speculation about the day when major awards shows — think Oscars, Emmys and (yes) Golden Globes — might follow suit and drop the distinction between “actor” and “actress” in their respective competitions. Organizers behind the Spirit Awards and the Canadian Screen Awards are following the examples set by the Recording Academy, MTV and the Gotham Film & Media Institute. The announcements by Film Independent on Aug. 23 and the Canadian Academy on Aug. 25 follow the July decision by backers of the British Independent Film Awards to eliminate gendered categories with this year’s competition.
I’ve been writing about this trend for several years, including my 2019 column “It’s Time for the Emmys to Eliminate Gender-Specific Acting Categories,” which garnered the most attention of anything I wrote that year. I followed that up with a piece in 2020 (“The Emmys and Other Awards Should Eliminate Gender Divisions, and Here’s How to Do It“), which suggested ways it could be done.
The idea of non-gendered awards shows began to pick up steam when the MTV Movie & TV Awards dropped gender-specific categories in 2017, but organizers of the Grammy Awards did away with gendered categories even earlier, removing female pop vocal performance and male pop vocal performance distinctions more than a decade ago. And the Television Critics Assn. has always awarded “individual achievement” in comedy and drama. Last year, the Gotham Awards converted to a gender-free approach after eight years of hand- ing out separate actor and actress trophies. “It’s something we’ve been discussing for a while,” Film Independent president Josh Welsh

The Locarno Film Festival will introduce gender-neutral acting awards for its 76th annual ceremony in 2023, festival organizers announced Wednesday. Already a festival that embraces diverse voices and gender parity – in 2018 it became the second world festival and first in Switzerland to sign the Programming Pledge for Parity and Inclusion in Cinema – Locarno’s announcement comes on the heels of other film organizations like the Independent Spirit Awards announcing similar initiatives. It is among the first world festivals to present gender-neutral acting categories.
Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent The Locarno Film Festival is switching to gender-neutral categories starting from next year’s 2023 edition. The prominent Swiss fest dedicated to global indie cinema is following in the footsteps of the Berlin Film Festival, which in 2021 awarded its first gender neutral acting prize. Unlike Berlin, however, Locarno will hand out two gender-neutral prizes for best performance in both the fest’s main competition and its Cineasti del Presente competition for first and second works. When Berlin did away with awards for the best actor and actress it subbed them with single gender neutral prizes for best leading performance and best supporting performance.
The Locarno film festival will shift to gender-neutral acting categories with its 76th edition set to run August 2-12, 2023.

And inspiring me to believe that we can all do that for each other.

Television Academy’s Emmys are meaningless, a new poll revealed. The survey of 1,000 people, which was conducted by OnePoll, unveiled that only 34% of respondents actually plan on watching this year’s 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, which air on Sept. 12 on NBC.The poll is a stark contrast from the 61% of people who said they watched the awards show at least “sometimes” in past years. It’s also a shock since 53% of those surveyed said they watch the most TV — at 15 hours or more weekly.Obviously, those who never really watch TV said they have no interest in watching the Emmys, with 93% of the anti-TV group expressing the sentiment.Last year, CBS scored a larger audience for the 2021 Emmy Awards, with the show increasing eyeballs by 16% — earning 7.4 million viewers.
