Artists slam website HitPiece for listing their songs as NFTs for auction without their knowledge

NFT website Hitpiece has been hit with legal action after several artists criticised it for allegedly auctioning off their music without their knowledge or permission.The website was showing hundreds of what appeared to be active auctions for NFTs tied to artists’ albums and songs, from iconic artists such as The Beatles, Taylor Swift and Bob Dylan to smaller independent acts.The move led to a backlash from artists with Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz and Sad13 tweeting: “Hey you stupid fucks, we don’t have any deal with you or any NFT site and there SURE DOES LOOK like an active auction going on for a speedy ortiz song.”Bleachers‘ Jack Antonoff added: “Any bleachers NFTs are fake. At the moment I do not believe in NFTs so anything you see associated with me isn’t real.

HitPiece, a website accused of offering NFTs of songs, came under scrutiny on Tuesday after musicians accused it of minting the NFTs without their permission. NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are digital certificates of ownership that are stored in a database called the blockchain.

It’s not clear what the people received when they purchased an NFT — whether just an image of an album cover, or whether there was an audio file attached. Whatever it was, it wasn’t authorized by the artists, some of the artists are alleging.

Creeper side-project Salem have released a new version of ‘Fall Out Of Love’, as heard in 2022’s Scream.The track originally featured as the opening track to their 2020 self-titled debut EP but now the duo (Will Gould and Matt Reynolds) have collaborated with alt-pop star Carlie Hanson for a new take on ‘Fall Out Of Love’.The track also plays out over the credits to the recently released Scream 5.“It is such an honour to be involved with the Scream movie soundtrack,” said Gould. “As big fans of the franchise it has been surreal to be asked to be a part of its legacy in some small way.
