Listen: An Album Leaf Soundtrack Cut From Benson & Moorhead’s Sundance Film ‘Something In The Dirt’ [Exclusive]

As you’ve hopefully heard by now, and read our review, the Sundance film, “Something In The Dirt” is a big hit. From filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who I like to describe as DIY versions of Christopher Nolan—that is to say ambitious, cerebral, complex sci-fi, horror, and genre films, but done on a lo-fi scale—“Something In The Dirt” is a swirl of all their previous heady, high-concept ideas, but with a big dose of humor and a deep look at the world of phenomenon, conspiracy theories and even pareidolia or apophenia (essentially the phenomenon of seeing patterns, consistencies and correlations of things that just aren’t there).

‘Archive 81’ Star Dina Shihabi on That Family Secret, How Melody and Dan Could Connect in a Season 2

Jennifer Maas TV Business WriterSPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched the finale of Netflix’s “Archive 81.”Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) spends the majority of the first season of Netflix’s “Archive 81” separated from the show’s other key characters, given that the camcorder-toting Visser resident’s story takes place in the ’90s and her work is being studied in the present day by archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie). But in the final moments of the “Archive 81” Season 1 finale, Melody becomes a literal blast from the past, as she is dragged through a portal from The Otherworld dimension she has been trapped in for decades by cult-leader Samuel (Evan Jonigkeit) and falls out in front of her long-lost mother, Julia Bennett/Bobbi (Jacqueline Antaramian), and Dan’s best friend, Mark (Matt McGorry). Samuel suspiciously doesn’t come through with her and Dan is nowhere to be seen, having accidentally exited god/demon Kaelego’s realm in the post-Visser-apartment fire ’90s, rather than the present-day entrance he went through in his attempt to rescue Melody.

Fans rejoice: Latest ‘And Just Like That’ trailer hints at Che Diaz breakup

TV’s most hated character?HBO Max has yet to even announce whether there will be Season 2 of the divisive “Sex and the City” spin-off.But in the next episode of “And Just Like That,” fans will see Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) dash to Cleveland to see her new paramour, comedian Che (Sara Ramirez). After telling her longtime husband Steve (David Eigenberg) that she wants a divorce, Miranda jumps on a plane to proclaim her love for Che, the show’s first nonbinary character. But it appears that she’s in for a rude awakening after turning up at Che’s hotel room — seemingly to find them with someone else.In a glimpse of the next episode, titled “No Strings Attached,” Che yells at Miranda, who turns up with a box of pastries: “You are not my ‘girlfriend.’ We are not dating,” to which Miranda exclaims: “We’re not? What are we doing?!”Che has turned out to be one of the most hated roles on the show, with even longtime fans lamenting the character’s contrived nature. Twitter has gone into hyperdrive about them, and after this week’s episode, one tweeted: “Stop subjecting us to che, they are making it really hard to get into and just like that….

Netflix LatAm Originals Boss Roberto Stopello and ‘Who Killed Sara’ Creator Chascas Valenzuela Set a Course for Netflix Novelas

Netflix’s ties with Latin America and the region’s much-loved telenovela format go back to the company’s first steps in original production outside of the U.S., when the streamer picked, as its first international original, Gary “Gaz” Alazraki’s “Club of Crows,” a soccer-themed soapy drama about a dynastic sports ownership family.Since then, there have been several further incursions into the world of the novela, including some of the streamer’s most popular ever series such as “Who Killed Sara,” currently filming its third and final season, and “Café con Aroma de Mujer,” “Rebelde” and “The Queen of Flow,” the top three non-English language series on Netflix globally at the time of this article’s publishing, sure to be joined by the second season of “Dark Desire” when it launches on Feb. 2.

‘Archive 81’ Review: Netflix’s Creepy Series Finds Its Scares By Restoring Memories Of The Past

To paraphrase 20th Century French theorist Roland Barthes, the moment we take a picture of something, it is already dead. Similarly, early cinema writer (and fellow Frenchman) Andre Bazin, thought that new technology evoked what he called the “mummy complex” — humankind’s urge to look to its past, to preserve these memories in amber, and to review them from a future moment.

Sorry for Your Loss, Patti Cake$, Unicorn Store) is the star of the show that will get you through January. It's called , and it's downright terrifying. Athie plays Dan Turner, a video archivist hired to restore a series of tapes recovered from a New York City apartment building fire. But what starts off as a standard job soon becomes frightening, as the found footage dives into the supernatural—and has surprising connections to Dan's own past. Athie is magnificent in the role, bringing depth and subtle heartbreak to what will surely be a buzzy piece of Netflix fodder.
