Having not been involved in Brazil’s recent internationals, the 22-year-old would have been expected to return as Ajax prepare for the defence of their title. Fellow United target Jurrien Timber was also absent on the first day but is likely on an extended break after being involved with the Netherlands earlier this month.

Antony’s absence naturally fuelled speculation that a move to Old Trafford could be in the works. United have identified the forward as their ideal option to bolster the right wing and solve something of a problem position.
However, the Brazilian was back at Ajax’s training ground on Saturday as he sent a message amid the speculation over his future. The forward posted videos of himself working out at the club’s gym as he prepares for the new season.
In one of the videos, which showed him running on a treadmill, Antony included a message. “The season has officially begun!! Focus on the recovery!!” he wrote.
Antony’s focus doesn’t seem to have been affected by the speculation surrounding his future. Schreuder has also addressed the interest from United and insisted he wants the forward to remain in Amsterdam.
