It was a historic night at the National Television Awards on Tuesday night as Ant and Dec were pipped to the top prize in the entertainment category by the cast of Gogglebox.
The Geordie duo have won the gong at the annual ceremony at London’s 02 Arena for more than a decade, so there were more than a few shocked faces in the crowd to see someone new stepping up for the accolade.
The Channel 4 show saw off the TV icons after years of it being a running joke that no one had a look in when they were nominated. Ant & Dec’s turns on shows including I’m A Celebrity, Britain’s Got Talent and Saturday Night Takeaway usually guarantee them the top spot.
But it turns out there were no hard feelings at all when it was announced that Gogglebox had won the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award category this time, as writes Yorkshire Live.
As the hosting legends were forced to stay seated while the Gogglebox team took to the stage, they clapped and waved as the Gogglebox stars gave a speech saying they had 'prepared no speech, nothing', and had had 'three vodkas' in their hotel before the ceremony, adding 'no way we've won you' as they addressed Ant and Dec.
The pair then gave them a big thumbs up just in case there was any doubt that they were pleased for them.
