Big-hearted staff and customers at Annan’s Dunnabie Farm Shop have raised the £1,100 needed for a life-saving defibrillator on the town’s High Street.
It has taken months of raffles to reach the full amount but now it has been installed and ready to use in an emergency by the public.
Jo Birtwhistle and Andrew Whittam, who sold a 30-acre farm in Yorkshire to purchase the 300-acre farm business at Waterbeck, which produces for the shop, are grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.
Jo said: “A big thank you to Gail Davidson for all her hard work in getting prizes for all our raffles; Barry Wilson electrician from Lockerbie, who fitted the defibrillator free of charge for the community; and a huge thank you to all our customers for supporting us and buying raffle tickets.
“Thank you again from the team at Dunnabie Farm Shop.”
The defibrillator compliments a number now in place around Annan after fundraising over the years.
The machines are used in addition to CPR to save the lives of those suffering a heart attack (cardiac arrest).
Research has shown that deploying a defibrillator within three to five minutes of collapse can produce survival rates as high as 50 to 70 per cent.
In case of an emergency it is important not to smash the protective doors on the equipment but to always phone 999 first and, if an ambulance is not immediately available, they will give a code to open the nearest box.
If the premises are open people can go inside for help and they will open the cabinet on request.
