Anyone saying it’s a slow week for new music releases clearly isn’t paying enough attention to their left-field pop girlies. You have Madison Beer (surprisingly good), Addison Rae (good but no one’s surprised), and Reneé Rapp (it is what it it is).
And then there’s Anitta, who’s not really left-field at all — she’s actually one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now — but has yet to become a household name in North America. With its embrace of Brazilian working-class culture, Anitta’s Funk Generation: A Favela Love Story may not be her next crossover smash, but it’s absolutely worth your attention.
The three-track bundle features the thunderous, previously released single “Funk Rave,” plus two new songs: “Casi Casi” and and “Used To Be.” “Casi Casi” also gets a salacious visual treatment, with Anitta as a smirking brothel receptionist, and “Used To Be” comes with a lyric video of its own. Watch all three videos and stream the tracks on their own below.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic The last time Sofia Coppola made a movie about a teenage royal living in a rococo palace that turned out to be a lavish prison, it was 2006, and the movie, “Marie Antoinette,” was a stylized dream of history — the story of the young queen as naïve and isolated rock star. Coppola’s new movie dramatizes the relationship between Priscilla and Elvis Presley, and the parallels with the earlier film are there if you want to see them.

Hollywood has had a very spotty record in telling the complete truths of some of our great musical geniuses. 1946’s Night And Day, an attempted, but really fictionalized, biopic on the life of Cole Porter with Cary Grant, totally ignored his real life homosexuality as well as sham marriage. That is just one example. The latest in the genre, Maestro having its World Premiere tonight at the Venice Film Festival, does not attempt to be a biopic at all on the great Leonard Bernstein, but instead puts its key focus on the relationship and 25 year marriage of Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, a star in her own right on the Broadway stage. All of it is presented including bringing up their three children – Jamie, Alexander, Nina – as well as Bernstein’s own bisexuality and attraction to younger men, not a secret to his wife.

Married At First Sight star Amy Christophers has revealed the reason she turned down the opportunity to appear on Love Island. Despite a few hurdles along the way, the pair made it to the end of the experiment but announced they had split at the reunion show a few months later.
Guy Lodge Film Critic More than one talking head in “The Issue With Tissue – A Boreal Love Story” uses the phrase “flushing away our forests,” to the point that it becomes a kind of aghast mantra for Michael Zelniker’s eco-documentary — tonally encapsulating its earnest exasperation with the world, or at least its human custodians. One can forgive the repetition, since the image is so pointed: Every year, vast stretches of Canada’s richly biodiverse boreal forest region are razed for that most literally disposable of causes: the manufacture of toilet paper.
