American Idol star Debra Byrd has sadly passed away at the age of 72, with Jennifer Hudson leading the tributes to the singer and professional music coach. Debra was a familiar face on TV, known for her role as a vocal coach on American Idol, The Voice, Canadian Idol and Military Idol. She passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles, but the cause of her death is yet to be confirmed.
Debra had an impressive career, teaching Grammy winners, recording artists, actors and musicians. She worked closely with big names like Barry Manilow, Bob Dylan and Kelly Clarkson. Jennifer Hudson, 42, paid a touching tribute to Debra in a heartbreaking post.
Alongside a series of pictures of the star during her time on American Idol, Jennifer wrote: "Heartbroken over the passing of Debra Byrd, the vocal coach on American Idol. "She encouraged and supported us from the very beginning! I am so grateful for everything she taught us. She will be dearly missed, but her legacy lives on through the music of countless artists she influenced during her lifetime.
Rest in peace, Debra." Mandy singer Barry Manilow, 80, also posted about the loss of Debra, who was a member of his backup group Ladyflash. Describing her as 'my love', he wrote: "This is one of the saddest days of my life. I just can't wrap my mind around the face that Debra is no longer with me.
She was one of the most wonderful friends I've ever had. I will miss you forever, my love." American Idol alum Clay Aiken, 45, then praised Debra as as a leader of young singers in a statement. He wrote: "I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that no one was a better mentor, coach, teacher, or champion to us Idol contestants than Byrd was.
