Say what you will about Michael Bay and his cinema bombast, but the guy knows how to make an epic thriller that usually needs to be seen on the big screen. He’s also convinced a pretty terrific cast to join him in his endeavor: Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González. Continue reading ‘Ambulance’ Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & Eiza González Star In Michael Bay’s Upcoming April-Release Thriller at The Playlist.

Michael Bay’s latest, the L.A. action extravaganza “Ambulance,” calls to mind one of the many, many oft-quoted lines from “The Big Lebowski.” John Goodman’s Walter Sobochak, in his rebuttal of the “believe in nothing” stance of the nihilists, proclaims, “Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos.” Now, to be clear, I am not comparing the work of Mr.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film CriticAt a time of strife, division, anxiety, and war, you might think the moment would be right for a nostalgic escape to the retro-excessive trash-movie mystique of the ’90s — an age when action thrillers were big, loud, decadent, “rebellious” and, as often as not, ripped off from “Die Hard.” “Ambulance,” however, could make you rethink that impulse. It’s directed by Michael Bay, who over the years has trafficked in a great many varieties of excess: massively scaled kiddie gizmo excess (the “Transformers” films), apocalyptic sci-fi excess (“Armageddon”), fake-authentic historical excess (“Pearl Harbor”), and good old buddy-movie excess (“The Rock” and “Bad Boys”).
