Seth asked if Amanda had known much about Elizabeth prior to taking on the role and she shared that she had actually listened to The Dropout, the podcast upon which the show is based.
While she had her judgements about Elizabeth after listening to the show, she decided upon taking the role that she had to come at her story from a different angle.
“What a complicated person to be able to play,” the actress told Seth. “I feel so lucky. I don’t know anything about her, but her story is as fascinating, or more, than it was before.”
Amanda revealed that she felt a deeper kinship with Elizabeth after being on one of the show’s sets for the first time.
“We’re essentially the same age… I have to remember this is a set, it was designed by a production designer we had a set dresser,” she acknowledged. “But I remember it really connected me to her because we were contemporaries, we were brought up in the same world where the same movies were playing, like we knew the same music… It really tied me to her.”

A tiny drop of blood, instead of a needle and a lab, and a radical idea to revolutionize medicine, disrupt the entire health care system, and maybe even change the world. This was the infamous Elizabeth Holmes/ Theranos story: a young, ambitious entrepreneur with a bold idea, inspiring a great suspension of disbelief in a lot of people dying to believe in her.
Amanda Seyfried delivers another award-worthy performance thanks to her portrayal of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, who was convicted of fraud, in Hulu’s true-crime miniseries,. Most notably, the 36-year-old actress recreates her real-life counterpart’s distinct baritone voice and signature style, which included a black turtleneck sweater accessorized with a green juice smoothie. The key, Seyfried and showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether tell ET, was to make sure the actress’ portrayal was not to make a joke of Holmes, which has already been done countless times by comedic performers, including star Chloe Fineman.
As Elizabeth Holmes awaits her fate, viewers will see how the disgraced founder of Theranos found herself possibly facing up to 20 years in prison in The Dropout. The Hulu miniseries, premiering on March 3, sees Amanda Seyfried star as Elizabeth, 37, while Naveen Andrews portrays Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, the man who helped co-found the controversial blood-testing tech startup. While Elizabeth has been the face of this scandal – her black turtleneck becoming as visibly recognizable as that of Steve Jobs‘ – Sunny has dodged the spotlight, for the most part. So, who is this man?
Elizabeth Holmes never ceases, especially now that she’s the subject of a scripted, true crime miniseries,. Starring Amanda Seyfried, the eight-part drama chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the deep-voiced, blonde entrepreneur’s quest to create a groundbreaking home device that people could use to test their blood for all types of illnesses.
