Alexandra Daddario Supports Leah Sava Jeffries Amid Backlash For Playing Annabeth Chase in 'Percy Jackson' Disney+ Series

Alexandra Daddario is speaking out about the backlash to Leah Sava Jeffries taking over the role of Annabeth Chase in Disney+’s upcoming Percy Jackson series.
The 36-year-old actress was the original portrayer of the character in both of the Percy Jackson movies and after hearing about the hate that Leah was receiving because she is not what the character looks like in the book series, took to social media to defend her.

Author Rick Riordan first addressed the backlash on his website, writing, “If you have a problem with this casting, however, take it up with me. You have no one else to blame.”
“Whatever else you take from this post, we should be able to agree that bullying and harassing a child online is inexcusably wrong. As strong as Leah is, as much as we have discussed the potential for this kind of reaction and the intense pressure this role will bring, the negative comments she has received online are out of line. They need to stop. Now.”
Rick then confirmed that he supported Disney’s policy on nondiscrimination and went into casting blindly, which means not to put a race to the character.
“I have been clear, as the author, that I was looking for the best actors to inhabit and bring to life the personalities of these characters, and that physical appearance was secondary for me,” he wrote. “We did that. We took a year to do this process thoroughly and find the best of the best. This trio is the best. Leah Jeffries is Annabeth Chase.”
Rick then pointedly called out the haters who were sending Leah threats and claiming that Annabeth should be portrayed by a white actor because she was written as white in the book.
