Gunshots fired into a crowd at an outdoor gathering in Virginia early Sunday left eight people wounded, officials said. The shooting happened around 2:20 a.m. in the 1500 block of Devon Lane in Harrisonburg, where an unknown individual or individuals fired multiple times into the crowd, the city tweeted Sunday.

As the battle over parental rights and protections for LGBT students heats up in Virginia, one state delegate said she will introduce a bill in the legislature's next session that would make it a crime for a parent or guardian not to affirm their child's sexual orientation or gender identity.  The move is in response to Republican Virginia Gov. A Virginia high school released students early Wednesday after the building was evacuated due to what officials described as an "incident" inside a chemistry classroom. The unspecified incident happened at Dinwiddie High School and was confined to a chemistry class, Dinwiddie County Public Schools wrote in a Facebook post.

Federal officials are investigating complaints about conditions at a West Virginia jail, according to a published report. The Register-Herald reports the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security denied its request to tour the Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County citing a federal probe of the facility. "The federal government is in the process of investigating the facility, and the integrity of that investigation is of the utmost importance to the WV Department of Homeland Security," said Morgan Switzer, deputy general counsel for the state agency said in an email to the newspaper.

A special education teacher at a public high school in Loudoun County, Virginia, was reportedly put on paid administrative leave after she was charged Friday with being under the influence of alcohol in public by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. Amy Richards, 60, is a special education teacher at Potomac Falls High School in Loudoun County, where she has taught eight out of her 21 years teaching in the county, according to local WJLA. Someone reportedly notified the school resource officer that Richards appeared to be "under the influence," according to police.

One adorable cat has traveled a very long way to find his forever home. Chaz, an all-white domestic shorthair cat, is currently up for adoption at King Street Cats in Alexandria, Virginia, after he was rescued in Kuwait. Police in Prince William County, Virginia said a man has been charged with raping an underage family member multiple times. Kevin Dean Rice, 50, of Bristow, turned himself into police on Wednesday after Special Victims Bureau detectives and Child Protective Services announced a sexual assault investigation days earlier, FOX 5 reported.
