John Oliver, host of the satirical TV news show Last Week Tonight, has gone viral for a pro-trans speech he made during his October 16 show.During the segment, Oliver discussed the fight for trans rights, with a focus on how conservatives have “truly lost their minds” about it. The host of the Emmy-winning series started by stating that over 100 anti-trans bills have been introduced in states across the United States, with 12 states signing them into law. Oliver went on to talk about the tactic used by conservatives to explain the rise in kids identifying as trans as “due to social contagion” or a “rapid onset gender dysphoria,” which Oliver said is, “total horseshit.”Oliver then pointed out that “there is ample evidence of gender variance throughout human history and as far back as historians have found evidence of trans people, they found trans children.   “And, to the extent that some young people are just exploring their gender identity, how exactly is that a bad thing? Gunshots fired into a crowd at an outdoor gathering in Virginia early Sunday left eight people wounded, officials said. The state of West Virginia is receiving around $1.7 million in federal funding over five years for a behavioral health program treating adults with serious mental illness. The money will be used to serve people living with mental illness who are also living with a physical health condition, chronic disease or substance use disorder, according to a West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources news release.

As the battle over parental rights and protections for LGBT students heats up in Virginia, one state delegate said she will introduce a bill in the legislature's next session that would make it a crime for a parent or guardian not to affirm their child's sexual orientation or gender identity.  The move is in response to Republican Virginia Gov. Escambia County Public Schools, Florida considered a proposal to revise a policy to allow parents to decide what books their children can read. At the beginning of Escambia County schools' "special workshop" on Monday, school board members addressed concerns over books that have been accessible to students.The workshop stemmed from a teacher's claim last month that over 100 books in Escambia County Public Schools violated Florida law.  "I think at some point we have to know that we have professionals working for us that are evaluating, making decisions, based on the literature that is being proposed.
