‘Succession’: this is the moment Shiv made her big decision in the finale

Succession executive producer Mark Mylod has shared the moment when Shiv (Sarah Snook) decided to turn against Kendall (Jeremy Strong) in the finale. In the final episode titled With Open Eyes, Shiv and Roman (Kieran Culkin) initially decide to back their brother Kendall in his bid to become the next CEO of Waystar Royco – a move which would block the takeover deal from GoJo founder Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). At the boardroom meeting, however, Shiv decides against voting for Kendall in the final hour, which sparks an explosive argument between the siblings.Asked on the official Succession podcast about when he believes Shiv starts to doubt backing Kendall, Mylod, who directed the episode, said: “I suppose it’s when Kendall sits down at his dad’s desk, when they meet with Stewy (Arian Moayed) before going down to the final board meeting. The reality of seeing him there that suddenly made it real, that is the future – him sat there in that insufferable way from her point of view – that’s when I think the denial started to crack.“And then seeing the cronyism with Stewy and seeing how she might be sidelined and again, just seeing his arrogance in the board meeting itself, accumulatively.”Mylod also shared that Shiv’s pivot was originally going to be less telegraphed.

Unpacking the Upfronts: How TV’s Big Week Reflects Broader Industry Turmoil

Cynthia Littleton Business Editor That was the week that was, and last week was an upfronts week like no other. Variety’s team of New York-based television and digital reporters offer a debrief on the 2023 programming presentations in New York on the latest episode of Variety weekly podcast “Strictly Business.” The drama roiling the industry was evident in all the Writers Guild of America picket signs that swarmed around the major events held from May 15 to May 17. That added to the general madness of the week that is a television and advertising industry tradition but is starting to feel anachronistic in the streaming era. But the upfronts are still a hard habit to break. Netflix even crashed the party this year, albeit virtually.

It’s an industry that has long benefited from advancements in technology that have increasingly enriched the quality of films and programs and have also condensed the filmmaking process across the entire pipeline from pre-production to distribution and exhibition.

Disney 2023 Upfront Takeaways: Unscripted Takes Center Stage, but Marvel, ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Shogun’ Bring the Heat

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Disney’s annual upfront presentation leaned heavily on the company’s non-scripted programming, opening with nearly an hour of focus on ESPN and its sports offerings. The emphasis on live events, of course, comes as the writers strike continues and is expected to impact the fall TV season. In fact, around 100 Writers Guild members and other union supporters marched outside the Javits Center on Tuesday to remind Disney they are still looking for a deal with the company and the other studios. Among those seen on the picket line: Zach Cherry and Michael Emerson. Inside the Javits, sports and news stars from within Disney were out in force, while reality personalities like Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Jesse Palmer and Ryan Seacrest made appearances as well. Even WABC-TV New York anchors Sade Baderinwa and Bill Ritter got some time onstage.

Fox Boss on ‘9-1-1’ Moving to ABC: ‘The Business Model Wasn’t Right for Us’

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Fox Entertainment’s CEO addressed the decision to cancel “9-1-1” and the show’s subsequent move to ABC during a conference call with the press ahead of the network’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. “We look at shows in two different ways,” said Rob Wade, CEO of Fox Entertainment. “First and foremost from a creative lens and how much we like the creative. And the second thing is really the economics of that. I think we felt moving forward into what is really a new era of television, the economics weren’t going to pan out on this show for us. The decision was made there that the business model wasn’t right for us and that 20th TV would take the show back.”
