AFI Awards: 'Da 5 Bloods,' 'Minari,' 'Soul' Among Picks for Best Films of 2020

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Gia Coppola’s sophomore feature Mainstream which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” follows a family of Korean-American immigrants who try to reboot their lives on a farm in 1980s Arkansas. The semi-autobiographical drama finds Steven Yeun essentially playing Chung’s father.

Nomadland has been named film of the year at the 41st London Critics' Circle Film Awards, adding to a growing array of honors the movie has amassed since it premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Chloe Zhao's American road movie also earned an actress of the year win for Frances McDormand and screenwriter of the year win for writer-director Zhao at the virtual ceremony on Sunday night.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to Tarzan and Arab Nasser’s Gaza Mon Amour, Palestine’s official submission for Best International Feature at the 93rd Academy Awards. The film will be released later this year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association often differs with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences when it comes to films not in the English language. Case in point this year, two titles not eligible in the International Feature Oscar race made the cut with the Golden Globes this morning as both Italy’s The Life Ahead and A24’s Korean-American family drama Minari scored nominations in the Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language category.

UPDATED with latest: The Santa Barbara Film Festival on Tuesday unveiled the recipients of its Virtuosos Award, given annually to a group recognizing their noteworthy performances in film. The honors will be bestowed Saturday, April 3.

Debbie Allen, Cynthia Erivo, Rian Johnson and Lulu Wang, among others — has unveiled its 10 best movies of 2020. Indicative of the year that was, the list is heavy on titles from Netflix, with additional streaming offerings via Amazon Studios, Disney+ and HBO Max.«All of the honored works advance the art of the moving image, inspire audiences and artists alike, enhance the rich cultural heritage of America's art form and make a mark on American society,» reads the press release.

The Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) has revealed its annual Top Ten List as well as winners of its film awards which was topped by Nomadland. In addition, The Chloé Zhao American wanderlust drama was named Best Picture. Also on the list is Pixar’s Soul which was also named Best Animated Feature.
