Kacey Musgraves and Reese Witherspoon are launching a new country music reality competition on Apple TV+ this month. My Kind Of Country will debut on the streaming platform on March 24 with the aim of increasing diversity within the genre. In a new trailer released this week, Witherspoon said: “When we got together a long time ago we were talking about how country music should stop limiting people and start opening doors… it’s music brought over from all over the world.”Musgraves added: “The bluegrass, the folk, the gospel. There’s so many threads woven through country music.”Among the trio of judges for the show is gay country singer Orville Peck alongside Black stars Jimmie Allen and Mickey Guyton, putting an emphasis on balancing out the overly white, male and heterosexual current country scene. After the judges recruit contestants from around the world, they will all then head to Nashville to compete for the chance to win “a life-changing experience from Apple, including global exposure across the Apple TV+ and Apple Music platforms.”Watch the trailer for My Kind Of Country below.Last year, Musgraves hit headlines when she called out Ted Cruz during a show in Austin, Texas.During her set at Austin City Limits while performing her hit song ‘High Horse’, Musgraves took aim at the Senator, singing: “‘Cause everyone knows someone who kills the buzz/ Every time they open up their mouth,” before pausing to say, “Ted Cruz… I said what I said.”During the same gig, Musgraves also took a stab at the U.S.

NBC, ‘People’s Choice Awards’ Create Separate Country Music Show

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Country music is about to get its fourth major annual awards show. NBCUniversal announced Thursday that a program honoring country’s most popular artists will be spun off from its “People’s Choice Awards,” with a two-hour telecast dubbed “People’s Choice Country Awards” set to debut in September on the NBC broadcast network and the Peacock streaming service. The host venue for the event will be Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House, which was used as a location by the Academy of Country Music Awards for a couple of years during the pandemic but has never been the principal ongoing location for any kudocasts in the past. The partnership is a result of the Opry’s parent company, Ryman Hospitality Properties, having struck a deal in April 2022 to sell a 30% stake in its entertainment operations to NBC Universal and the investment firm Atairos.

Black Country, New Road release new music as live film

Black Country, New Road have released a new live film featuring eight brand new songs.“We didn’t want to do a studio album”, says pianist May Kershaw. “We wrote the new tracks specifically to perform live, so we thought it might be a nice idea to put out a performance”.Filmed over three nights at Bush Hall in London in December, the band decided against the convention of cutting together multiple performances to look like one and instead gave each show a distinct visual style, which they cut between throughout the film.“We had concerns from live sessions we’ve seen or done in the past”, says guitarist Luke Mark. “They are very obviously clumped together visually from multiple performances.

Booming Baltic Industries Share the Limelight in Berlin as EFM’s Countries in Focus

Christopher Vourlias When a rock festival held in Tallinn in the summer of 1988 was shut down by Soviet authorities, thousands of Estonians took to the streets, waving Estonian flags and singing patriotic songs in a bold show of defiance of Soviet rule. By the festival’s final night, some 200,000 people had joined what would later be dubbed the Singing Revolution, a catalyst for the non-violent movement that swept across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the early-‘90s and paved the way for independence. Even under Moscow’s thumb the Baltics demanded to be heard. For decades the three small nations have drawn on their historical, cultural and economic ties to create a sum that’s bigger than its parts, a collaborative spirit that’s also energized the countries’ growing screen industries, which will share the stage as joint Countries in Focus at this year’s European Film Market.
