Royal historian Robert Lacey explained the decision had to do with minimizing the distress the citizens of the British monarch might feel if she stumbled. "She would not want to stumble – not for her own sake but for the distress it would cause other people," Lacey told People magazine. However, her absence was even felt at events she did attend.

LONDON – Trooping the Colour, an amazing spectacle of pomp and pageantry, finally returned to London this week for the first time since 2019.  Trooping the Colour showcased more than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians going on parade, with mega crowds gathering in the streets of London for this special Platinum Jubilee edition. Fashionably royal! Queen Elizabeth II‘s Platinum Jubilee celebration has commenced, and the British monarch is marking 70 years on the throne in style.

Queen Elizabeth will begin her Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Thursday morning with the Trooping the Colour parade to mark her 96th birthday, an annual event which has been postponed the last two years due to the coronavirus.  Elizabeth became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee earlier this year following 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, Realms and the Commonwealth.  After a grand military display including horses, carriages, a flypast from the Royal Air Force and hundreds of musicians parading down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Palace, the queen is expected to appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony to greet the public.  Historically, the British monarch has taken the salute to her troops, known as the Household Division on Horse Guards Parade.  Queen Elizabeth II is photographed at Sandringham House to mark the start of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee Year, on February 2, 2022 in Sandringham, Norfolk.
