2022 SAG Awards: Helen Mirren Makes A ‘Sag’ Joke As She’s Honoured With Lifetime Achievement Award

Emily Longeretta Nothing can stop Chita Rivera!That was the message of the evening at Monday’s Roundabout Theatre Company Gala, which carried the moniker, “Paint the Town.” The celebration, held at New York City’s famous Ziegfeld Ballroom, celebrated three-time Tony recipient Chita Rivera.Rivera, who starred in two major Broadway shows for Roundabout — 2003’s “Nine” and the 2013’s “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” — is best known for originating roles in “West Side Story,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Chicago” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”The night kicked off with a cocktail hour filled with theater stars, including Jane Lynch, Tony Shaloub, Richard Kind, Betsy Wolfe, Cherry Jones and many more, who mingled and couldn’t help but chat about how nice it was to be mask-free and able to hug one another again. Lynch, who is set to star in the upcoming production of “Funny Girl” opening next month, was greeted by both stars and execs alike, all eagerly confessing that they couldn’t wait to see the production.After one hour, everyone descended downstairs to the ballroom — a packed room of folks ready for Rivera’s honor, a full dinner, an auction and a performance by Sara Bareilles.Following opening remarks by Danny Burstein, artistic director and CEO of Roundabout Theater, Todd Haimes, took the stage and joked about the “rough two years” everyone has been through — especially when it comes to theater.With that, he passed the mic to a video message from Lin Manuel Miranda, who went on to introduce Helen Mirren.

Tyler Perry, Shari Belafonte, Douglas Hodge, and more pinned to their clothes a blue and yellow ribbon in honor of the second-largest country in Europe.Other stars, including Fran Drescher, Lady Gaga, Leslie Odom Jr., Andrew Garfield, and Laverne Cox, acknowledge the crisis and pray to the victims. “The performances we are celebrating here tonight have brought you joy and inspiration this year,” Cox said during the award ceremony.

Bring on the bling! The 2022 SAG Awards served up one sparkly red carpet. Because while the bold dresses and gorgeous glam didn’t disappoint, it was the over-the-top jewels that completely blew Us away.

Helen was introduced at last night by fellow British actress Kate Winslet, 46, who, for an unknown reason, couldn’t physically attend the event so gushed about Helen from a remote location via video link.

Dame Helen Mirren is a SAG Life Achievement Award.The 76-year-old actress was honored with the awards at the 2022 SAG Awards on Sunday, after a career retrospective and a glowing introduction from Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett.«Lifetime achievement? It sounds so grand. I guess I am still alive, so I am eligible,» Mirren said as she accepted her award. «But honestly, any achievement that I've succeeded in, is a result of my mantra, which is basically, be on time and don't be an ass.»«I hate to say the word 'sag' at my age, it's always S.A.G. for me,» she joked as she thanked her fellow guild members. «Of course, we know it takes a myriad of people to make a drama… but now, it is the actors I address,» she continued, naming performers she's admired, past and present. «I joined a tribe of rogues and vagabonds years ago, and it is you, you actors, that I want to thank, for you wit and humor.
