Variety’s Entertainment Marketing Summit in Los Angeles, marketing pros came together to discuss their challenges, best practices and triumphs. Competition for Attention Is Fierce In the summit’s opening session, moderated by Variety co-editor-in chief Cynthia Littleton, panelists spoke about dealing with trying to win viewers amid the flood of content across platforms. “We’re competing with everything… This is no longer a linear-timeslot thing,” said Margaret Walker, SVP, NBC brand strategy and audience growth. Domenic DiMeglio, chief marketing officer of Paramount Streaming, said that staying close with fans on social can help inform content-development strategy. For example, he cited “Teen Wolf,” which ended its run on MTV in 2017 but “had a really engaged, rabid social fanbase.” That led the company to develop a “Teen Wolf” movie for Paramount+ that premiered in January.

The Snapchat parent is promoting Colleen DeCourcy to lead marketing at Snap, after she has served as chief creative officer since February 2022. Mitchell will officially depart Snap next month following the company’s NewFronts presentation on May 2. As Snap’s new head of marketing, DeCourcy will report directly to CEO Evan Spiegel. “Kenny is a dedicated, thoughtful and determined leader who has built our marketing team, helped us to launch countless products and created some of our most impactful campaigns, including ‘Real Friends’ and ‘Open Your Snapchat,'” Spiegel said in a statement. “Perhaps most importantly, he is a true team player and has worked tirelessly to support our team. I will sincerely miss working with Kenny.”

While high prices, availability issues and a bevy of vaguely defined “service fees” could be expected for such box-office record-breakers as Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen, Smith was as surprised as anyone to see the prices on his group’s “Lost World” tour, its first for several years. While the group had managed to avoid such controversial policies as platinum packages and variable pricing, Smith was appalled to see hefty service fees added to the cost of “Verified Fan” tickets, which are intended to protect fans by keeping tickets out of the hands of scalpers, for the tour.
