EXCLUSIVE: Documentary+, the ad-supported streaming platform launched by Bryn Mooser’s XTR, is moving into distribution.
The company is launching a distribution division and is looking to acquire hot non-fiction projects at industry festivals and markets.
The plan is to acquire films and give them “bespoke” release strategies – ranging from eventized theatrical exhibition to TVOD partnerships and other digital windowing – before premiering exclusively on Documentary+.
The service launched in 2021 and averages over 3M monthly users. It houses projects from filmmakers such as Oliver Stone, Alex Winter, Taryn Southern, Roger Ross Williams, Errol Morris, The Ross Brothers, Lauren DeFilippo, and Brett Morgen as well as originals including The Sentence of Michael Thompson.
Its parent company is behind films such as Ascension, Meet Me In The Bathroom and Sirens as well as Apple series They Call Me Magic.
“With the current state of the industry, our team at Documentary+ saw a need for a distributor who places audiences and filmmakers at the center of its business model,” said Bryn Mooser, CEO of XTR and Documentary+. “We wanted to introduce a player in the film market who anticipates the needs of both parties and becomes the connective tissue. We are at a moment of disruption where Taylor Swift is going directly to theaters and FAST channels are taking over cable. This is the moment for Documentary+.”
