Thousands of benefits claimants who have refused to switch to Universal Credit have had their payments stopped due to strict bank account rules. People who claim certain benefits which are coming to an end must switch to Universal Credit and will have been sent a Migration Notice explaining how to do so.
Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) and Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) are all being replaced by Universal Credit. But there are four main reasons that people aren't going ahead with the claim, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has said.
Having too much money in savings is one of them, reports BirminghamLive. Anyone claiming Universal Credit will see their payments reduced if their savings exceed £6,000 and stopped altogether if they go above £16,000.

There are also income rules that reduce benefit payments by 55p for every £1 in wages going into their account. But some claimants can earn a certain amount, known as a work allowance, before their Universal Credit is reduced. This applies if they or their partner have a child or a disability.
However, people on tax credits who receive a letter telling them to move to Universal Credit won't be affected by these capital limits for the first 12 months. This means they can make a Universal Credit claim even if they have savings and investments of over £16,000. The rule kicks in after one year if the amount of cash they have is still above that threshold.
