A survey has found that four out of ten sports fans have been forced to cancel at least one of their TV subscriptions due to the cost of living crisis.
The monthly TV subscription model has dominated live sport for decades. For example, football fans in the UK needed three separate subscriptions - Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime - to ensure that they got access to all 200 televised Premier League games this season.
Meanwhile, fans of other sports may rely heavily on any one of these three platforms, plus streaming service DAZN, which had exclusive broadcast rights for Anthony Joshua’s most recent win in April. An avid sports fan could be paying up to £83-per-month for all four broadcasters, with many facing the tough decision to ditch their subscriptions.

A survey of 1,000 people, conducted by investment platform Saxo, has revealed that 41% of people who watch sports have unsubscribed from at least one TV platform due to the cost of living crisis. It found that those in the 16-24 age bracket have been the hardest hit, with a huge 60% being forced to cancel a sport TV subscription in the last year.
The cost of living crisis has also had a significant impact on the 25-34 age group, with 50% making the same call, while 14% of those aged 55 plus have cancelled at least one of their sport packages. Overall, the survey found that 37% of people in the north west have been forced to make the same decision.
The impact of the economic crisis is not just limited to TV screens, though. Saxo’s survey found that 46% of people who attend live sport have gone to fewer events in the last year due to the rising costs involved.
