Mr Johnson claimed he had won a 'convincing result', saying: "I think this is a very good result for politics and for the country, it's a convincing result, a decisive result and what it means is that as a Government we can move on and focus on the stuff that I think really matters to people.
"We now need to come together as a Government, as a party, and that is exactly what we can now do."
But calls have surged for him to resign, with Labour's deputy leader, Angela Rayner, saying : "Boris Johnson is now 'mortally wounded' despite winning the vote among Conservative MPs, calling him 'arrogant, dismissive, a liar'.
