With parts of the UK set to scorch in the coming days, pet owners are being advised to take extra care of their four legged friends as the temperatures increase. Although many of us welcome the heat, our beloved pets may not be so keen, especially not with temperatures in some parts of the country expected to reach 30 degrees on Friday.
While the sunshine could seem like the perfect weather to take your dog for a walk, experts have warned that it’s important to be aware of how sensitive our canine companions are to the heat and to recognise the signs and symptoms that may indicate they are unwell. So how hot is too hot to walk your dog? According to Vets Now, it’s usually safe to walk your dog in temperatures below 19 degrees.
Once the temperature rises above that however, it brings a risk of heat stroke, with pet owners urged to recognise the signs and symptoms of the potentially fatal condition. Heat stroke occurs when dogs are no longer able to self-regulate and keep their temperature at a comfortable level, and the higher the mercury climbs the higher the risk becomes.
In normal circumstances a temperature between 16 and 19 degrees is generally considered safe for dogs, but even just a few degree higher, between 20 and 23 degrees carries with it a six out of ten risk for your pooch. This increases again dramatically if temperatures reach between 24 and 27 degrees, with a nine out of ten risk, while all dogs are at risk if the weather exceeds 32 degrees. How will I know if it’s too warm? While we can be forgiven for not carrying a thermometer everywhere we go, one Practice owner has revealed there is actually a simple trick to tell if it’s too hot to walk your dog.
