After months of speculation, Rishi Sunak has finally announced the date Brits will head to the polls in a general election this year.
The prime minister made a statement outside Downing Street this afternoon, confirming that the national vote will take place on Thursday, July 4 - just over six weeks' time.
Now that a date has been set, some people may be wondering what they can do if they plan to be away on the date of the election. Most people vote in person at their local polling station, but it is possible to vote by post or with a proxy voter - as long as you register in time.

With summer around the corner, there could be more people than usual turning to postal or proxy votes this year. Thousands of football fans will be flying over to Munich in Germany while the Euros are on between June 14 and July 14, while music lovers will be heading to see their favourite bands across the UK and Europe as festival season gets underway.
If you know you're going to be abroad or away from home, you can apply for a postal vote, which you can send off before you go. You need to make sure you are registered to vote before you apply for a postal vote.
To apply online, you'll need the address where you are registered to vote, as well as your National Insurance number or another identity document such as your passport. You’ll also need to upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper.
If you can't apply for a postal vote online, you can apply by sending off a postal vote application form, which your local Electoral Registration Office will be able to send out to you.
