It was more of a case of if you can't stand the sweet, than heat, in Monday's episode of Coronation Street. For Corrie fans may have been surprised to learn what the cast members were really having to endure in tonight's chilli-eating contest scenes - and it wasn't anything to do with spice.
Monday night's episode featured Gemma's chilli-eating contest, which saw her organise the event to raise money for Paul, who has motor neurone disease. Dev, Chesney and Shona took part in the competition, with Shona winning.
And while the popular cast members did put on a hilariously impressive performance by appearing as if their mouths were on fire. Twitter fans were soon informed exactly how they managed to eat so many of the fiery peppers.
The 'chillies' were actually made completely out of sugar. And this was all thanks to the clever expertise of Rochdale's Red Butterfly Bakery.
During the airing of the episode @CharleneRBB revealed on Twitter: The [chillies] from this evenings #Corrie which were actually made out of sugar! Fair play to the cast though as they would have been wired after these scenes. Pure sugar!"
The local bakery is no stranger to making an appearance on the soap, as well as the likes of This Morning and Good Morning Britain.
The bakery's owner Charlene McLean told the MEN: "I’ve been making on screen Corrie cakes for around four and a half years now. The Art Director in charge of the shoot contacted me as they needed something which the cast could eat multiple times for different takes, which obviously ruled out real chillis!
"Although the fact the faux chillis were made out of pure sugar means the cast would have been wide awake for a while."
