Plans to close a car park in the Bathgate Hills which is popular with stargazers have been criticised by a local councillor.
A consultation process is under way in Bathgate but local SNP member Willie Boyle described it as "Hobson's Choice" as it only offered a single option of closing the car park at night.
And he said the public should have more of a say instead of being asked a loaded question.
And he pointed out that the Hilltop car park was designed to serve an access path up to Cairnpapple which has now been fenced off.
Councillor Boyle told a meeting of Bathgate Local Area Committee: "The problem I have is that the consultation is loaded. It offers one option which closing it from seven o'clock at night to seven o'clock in the morning. It doesn't ask what the public want to see with this car park.
"It's very Hobson's Choice, a consultation should be about participation and there's no view being sought other than we're going to shut the car park at night."
Councillor Boyle highlighted two other car parks, one at Oakbank near Livingston and one at Woodmuir Road near West Calder, which are not shut at night despite frequent reports of anti-social behaviour.
Officers first announced a plan to close the Hilltop car park last year after frequent reports of vandalism including the compacting bin being set alight. Mounting costs were being faced in sending cleaning crews to the site on a regular basis. Other car parks Bathgate Hills are gated and closed at night and have far fewer problems.
The Hilltop car park affords views across the county to the relatively undeveloped south west of the county. With much less light pollution it is popular with stargazers.
Councillor Boyle said: "This is a complicated issue.
