The box office is taking a massive hit due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
According to early estimates on Sunday (March 15), all films over the weekend brought in an estimated $54.4 million, according to Deadline.
The number is lower than the September 15-17 weekend in 2000, which brought in $54.52 million, resulting in what looks to be a 21-year low. (The next lowest weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, was in 1999 in the January 15-17 timeframe, bringing in $54 million.)

The coronavirus pandemic has halted some of your favorite acts from performing live, causing them to suffer an economic blow because of touring's impact on their income. But ticket sales aren't the only vital purchase fans can make to support them.
The Korean box office hit rock bottom this weekend due to coronavirus that is fast spreading in the country. According to KOBIS, the box-office tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the country’s box office managed some 230,803 ticket sales between Saturday and Sunday. That is lower than the previous weekend’s 285,663 admissions and is not even half the sales managed over the weekend before that.
