Plans to build 30 new affordable homes on a much-loved field in the heart of an estate are dividing a community. The proposals would see rental housing ‘for local people’ built off Borrowdale Road, in Langley, Middleton. The land is known locally as ‘The Ponderosa’ - also an old colloquial name for Langley itself.
The project is being driven by Big Help Langley Developments - a community interest company formed by Langley Community Benefits Society and charity The Big Help. West Middleton councillor Sue Smith - a founder member of the benefits society - has been instrumental in bringing the partnership together, and says the area is crying out for social housing.
But some locals insist The Ponderosa - used for community events and popular with dog walkers and children - is not the place for them. Objectors have formed The Ponderosa Committee to push back against the plans while Facebook group ‘Commoners Save the Ponderosa, Langley’ has just shy of 1,000 members.READ MORE: Greens back former Labour councillor’s bid to become MP at next general election
As well as opposing loss of the green space there also appears to be an air of distrust among some residents, who question how affordable the homes will be, how they can be prioritised for Langley people and who will ultimately benefit from the scheme. Others express dissatisfaction with the consultation process so far, saying it has been dismissive of dissenting voices and not inclusive of the whole community.
Coun Smith, however, says people across Langley and Middleton have complained to her for years about the lack of social housing for local people - and many are 'very much in favour of the proposed scheme and support what will be enhanced green space with social

Naman Ramachandran A U.K. Public Accounts Committee report has highlighted that the BBC does not currently have a plan in place for delivering its services in the digital future it envisions. The corporation must work with the government and other stakeholders, including on the rollout of broadband across the U.K., to develop a detailed plan, including scenarios for how it could switch to an internet-only future, the report states. It adds that the BBC must take steps to ensure that nobody is left behind as it moves towards a fully digital future, due to a lack of confidence in adopting the necessary technologies, access to them, or affordability. The report raises the topic of BBC Three, noting that it was started as a linear channel, then moved online, but then went back to being linear six years later, as “an example of where it moved too soon, and audiences did not follow.”

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Justin Bieber came to the defense of Frank Ocean in an Instagram post in which the “Peaches” singer praised Ocean’s controversial Coachella performance. Ocean headlined Coachella 2023 along with Bad Bunny and Blackpink, but his April 16 set proved to be a massive disappointment for fans after he started an hour late, skipped over many fan-favorite songs, performed mostly sitting down and with his back to the crowd and lip-synched to several tracks. He also ran past the Coachella curfew and abruptly ended his set after less than 90 minutes. While Ocean has received pans for his performance, Bieber had nothing but raves for his fellow musician. Bieber, who memorably surprised Coachella in 2019 by joining Ariana Granda’s headlining set, praised Ocean’s artistry and voice in a heartfelt note on social media.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic If I were to count on one hand the most preeminent humanist filmmakers of our time, the first two fingers would have to be dedicated to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. Bringing empathy and insight to stories of immigrants, outcasts and the working poor, the Belgian siblings have dedicated their career to observing characters Western society prefers to overlook. In that time, the brothers have screened every one of their 12 features at Cannes, collecting two Palme d’Or trophies — in 1999 for “Rosetta” and 2002 for “L’Enfant.” The Dardennes keep the prizes in the office they share at their Liège-based production company, Les Films du Fleuve. “They are in an armoire so the sight of them doesn’t weigh too heavily on our shoulders when we start working on a new film,” they tell Variety.
