K.J. Yossman Louis Theroux will deliver this year’s James MacTaggart memorial lecture, the flagship address at the Edinburgh TV Festival. The Music Modernization Act Transformed Licensing, but There’s More Work to Do: Guest Column by Rep. Darrell Issa

Darrell Issa Guest Columnist Darrell Issa, Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet represents California’s 48th Congressional District. Later today on the Nashville, TN campus of Belmont University, I’ll convene a field hearing of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet. The hearing won’t just take place in Music City, USA but five years after Congress achieved that rarest of things: A consensus solution that recognized the rights of musical artists and created a way they could be compensated fairly by publishers. It may be hard for some to believe, but at the time we crafted this legislation, the music industry and other content owners were being crushed by widespread piracy and an inability to monetize the value of musical creativity.

Ariel Marx and Este Haim on How the Music of ‘A Small Light’ Brought Fresh Shadings to Heroic Holocaust Drama

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension. Este Haim took on the EMP job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,” she produced episode-ending covers of songs from the first half of the 20th century, performed by Angel Olsen, Moses Sumney, Kamasi Washington, Sharon Van Etten with Michael Imperioli, Remi Wolf, Weyes Blood, duet partners Orville Peck and King Princess, and her sister Danielle.

Here’s how to get affordable tickets to see Tony award-winning SIX The Musical

“SIX The Musical,” running at the Lena Horne Theatre, is as hot as ever. The upbeat 80-minute musical follows the lives of Henry VII’s six wives and how they moved on — “divorced, beheaded, died…divorced, beheaded, survived.” Over the course of the production, the Queens compete to determine who will be the lead singer of their band — winner is whomever was treated the worst by the King. The music in “SIX” is pop with a feminist tinge; for our money, the show feels more like a concert than theater.Don’t lose your head — be smart and take advantage of the affordable, available ticket prices for “SIX” while you can.At the time of publication, we found tickets going for as low as $78 before fees on Vivid Seats—not a bad price to catch a Tony-winning show live. We’ve got everything you need to know and more about seeing “SIX” live on Broadway. All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.Interestingly enough, “SIX” only runs five days a week.As of now, audiences can catch the show eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday at Broadway’s Lena Horne Theatre — there are no Monday or Sunday performances.

Angela Bassett is a force of nature in Hollywood. Her talent, strength, and longevity in an industry known for its fleeting moments of fame speak to her relevance and influence. Her rise as a distinguished African American actress in Hollywood has had an impact on the entertainment industry and the representation of Black talent. Bassett’s breakthrough role came in 1993 when she played Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination. This performance was instrumental in breaking away from the tropes that plagued Black actresses in Hollywood, demonstrating that they could carry films of prestige.

‘Bad Like Brooklyn Dancehall’ Review: A Compelling, But Standardized, Introduction To The Musical Genre [Tribeca]

A compelling introduction to the cultural history of the Jamaican musical genre dancehall, Ben DiGiacomo and Dutty Vannier’s “Bad Like Brooklyn Dancehall” sheds light on what one interviewee calls the associated “attitude, culture, and lifestyle” that crops up around dancehall music. Produced by Shaggy, one of the most notable names to push the genre into popular culture, ‘Bad Like Brooklyn’ may seem paint-by-numbers in its formal approach to introducing and dissecting a cultural movement — there are a lot of talking heads, archival footage, etc.

‘The Adults’ Review: Dustin Guy Defa’s Indie Drama About Siblings Experiencing Grief And Reconnection – Tribeca Festival

Complicated sibling relationships are the basis of Dustin Guy Defa’s new film The Adults. The film depicts the emotional journey of three siblings played by Michael Cera, Hannah Gross, and Sophia Lillis, reuniting in their Mother’s death, a scenario that, while rife with potential conflict, also presents an opportunity for reconnection, understanding, and healing. As Defa portrays, such a reunion can cause the distance that has grown between siblings over time to become painfully real.

‘Our Son’ Review: A Moving, Turbulent Gay Marriage Story With Heart And Humor – Tribeca Film Festival

“How do people do this?” asks well-to-do New York book publisher Nicky (Luke Evans) in a state of exasperation. Nicky is in the thick of a bitter custody battle for his eight-year-old son Owen (Christopher Woodley), after Gabriel (Billy Porter), his partner of 13 years, has decided to call time on their relationship. It’s a well-worn premise in mainstream cinema — essayed most recently by Noah Baumbach’s acerbic Marriage Story, and still portrayed most famously in Robert Benton’s 1979 weepie Kramer vs. Kramer — but gay cinema has been slow to tackle the issue. With his second movie, the follow-up to the 2018 sci-fi Jonathan, Bill Oliver corrects that oversight with a beautifully judged human drama that dissects a dying marriage with humor and intelligence, drawing out an especially open and moving performance from Porter.

David Byrne reaches hiring agreement over ‘Here Lies Love’ Broadway musical

David Byrne has reached an agreement with a musicians union over his Here Lies Love Broadway musical. The musical is based Byrne and Fatboy Slim‘s double album of the same name, which was released in 2010 and documents the life of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines. It was previously held at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in 2012, New York’s Public Theater in 2013, London’s National Theater in 2014, and the Seattle Repertory Theater in 2017.But a new Broadway production, which is set to premiere on July 20 with previews beginning next weekend, received an objection from the American Federation of Musicians’ Local 802 last month over the show’s plan to use pre-recorded music. The union claimed that it violated a contract clause requiring that at least 19 musicians are hired for all musicals staged at the Broadway Theater. Responding to criticism in The New York Times, a spokesperson for the production claimed that the decision to use pre-recorded music was “part of the karaoke genre inherent to the musical and the production concept.”At the time, Byrne issued a statement of his own defending the production choices, explaining the “dance club track-act immersion” as part of the show’s nontraditional staging. But it has now been agreed that the production will go ahead with 12 musicians, all of whom are union members. We are proud to announce that “Here Lies Love” will have live music in the form of 12 musicians.

David Byrne and Broadway Union Reach Agreement Over ‘Here Lies Love’ Production

Thania Garcia “Here Lies Love,” the new David Byrne musical that’s set to begin previews on Broadway starting June 17, and the American Federation of Musicians’ Local 802 have reached an agreement over the inclusion of live musicians in the production. The show will be continuing with 12 musicians, according to a statement from Local 802 shared with Variety. “Broadway is a very special place with the best musicians and performances in the world, and we are glad this agreement honors that tradition,” commented Tino Gagliardi, Local 802’s president and executive director in the announcement. Producers of the musical also issued a statement: “On behalf of our entire cast, company and creative team, we have reached an agreement with Musicians Union Local 802, per the collective bargaining agreement. We look forward to welcoming audiences to experience the revolutionary musical experience that is Here Lies Love at the Broadway Theatre beginning on Saturday, June 17.”

‘Downtown Owl’ Review: The Music And Spirit Of Elvis Costello Drive This Thoughtful Backwater Dramedy – Tribeca Film Festival

It might sound like a backhanded compliment, but Downtown Owl feels more like a pilot than a feature film and may yet yield a series. In today’s market, that could work out just fine for directors Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe, who, after a choppy start, finesse Chuck Klosterman’s digressive 2007 novel into a thoughtful, broad-canvas ensemble piece. T Bone Burnett helps nail things down with an eclectic alt-country score and soundtrack, infused with the music and spirit of Elvis Costello, but it’s Rabe that holds it all together onscreen with a controlled yet still wildly uninhibited performance.
