Retail giant M&S has taken a bold stance against online body shaming after Vogue Williams, their ambassador and well-known TV and radio personality, faced cruel comments from trolls on social media. The incident occurred when Vogue shared a video of herself modelling swimwear during a family vacation with her husband Spencer Matthews and their children Theodore, four, Gigi, three, and baby Otto, 15 months.
In the clip, she wore a black scalloped swimsuit, which she called one of her “faves”, and explained it could be worn as “a bodysuit as well.” The high street brand posted Vogue’s video on their Instagram page, however Vogue was swiftly bombarded with hurtful remarks about her slim physique. “You are beautiful but too thin,” one wrote.
Another added: “I wish that you would show a woman (dare I say it ?) who has love handles, tiger stripes et.al ?” Another said they stopped watching because Vogue was too slim. In response to the negativity, M&S swiftly intervened, posting a statement in the comments section of the video. The statement emphasised their commitment to using their platform in a positive manner, promoting body positivity, and celebrating individuals of all shapes and sizes.
M&S firmly stated that they would not tolerate any unkind or negative comments and would take appropriate action to remove anything unacceptable. The public's reaction to M&S's stance has been largely supportive. Many people were appalled by the hurtful comments aimed at Vogue, emphasising that body positivity should apply to everyone, regardless of their size.
